Elderly man seriously assaulted in popular park

An elderly man suffered a serious assault in a popular park

A man was later arrested in connection with the incident on Portland yesterday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Weymouth and Portland Police said: "At around 16:20 officers from Portland NPT attended Easton Gardens, near to the public toilets.

"At the location we dealt with a local male in his 70s who had been the victim of quite a serious assault.

"A local male in his 50s was located by officers soon after the offence, and has now been arrested.

"We would like to thank members of the public in their assistance with locating the suspect, and providing first aid to the victim.

"We would like to appeal for witnesses to the assault which occurred directly opposite Boots, on the bench by the toilets."

"If anyone has CCTV/doorbell/dash cam footage, it would also greatly assist our enquiries."
