Elderly woman dies in apartment fire in Rogers Park

A 79-year-old woman was pronounced dead after being found in a basement apartment of a building where a fire broke out Thursday night, officials said.

About 8:45 p.m., officers and firefighters responded to a fire at a three-story building at 6532 N. Ashland Ave. in the Rogers Park neighborhood where an elderly woman was found in a basement apartment.

The woman was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where she was pronounced dead, Chicago police said.

The woman was identified as Bertha Torres of the same address , according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

No other injuries were reported in the fire. Fire officials were investigating.
