Eleanor Tomlinson has hinted that her Peaky Blinders audition was cut short because her Birmingham accent was so bad.
The actor - who rose to fame in hit drama Poldark - is a dab hand at certain accents. But it seems that she struggled to get her pronunciation right when she tried out for the gangster series, which stars Cillian Murphy and is set in Birmingham in the 1920s.
She opened up about it on ITV’s This Morning, where presenter Alison Hammond – who is from Birmingham herself – joked that Tomlinson should have called her for some tips ahead of her audition.
What, how, and why?
Tomlinson was talking about some of her roles when Hammond mentioned that she’d heard she couldn’t perfect her Brummie accent.
She and co-host Dermot O’Leary asked the star when she had realised she had trouble with it, and she revealed: “During the Peaky Blinders audition - which was very short!”
“Why did you not give me a call? I could have given you some coaching?” Hammond joked, and Tomlinson agreed that she should have done.
O’Leary then asked the actor if she’d actually been in her Peaky Blinders audition at the time, and she replied: “Yes! And they actually said, ‘Oh you really can’t do the accent can you?’ I was like, ‘Uh thanks no… I am trying!’”
Hammond then offered some help, trying to get the star to copy her as she said: “I want you to say, ‘I am just going down the road’.”
However, Tomlinson refused, giggling as she explained: “If I say that I will never work again!”
What else did Eleanor Tomlinson say on This Morning?
During her chat, Tomlinson also shared that while she is known for her red hair she is actually blonde, but chose to colour it to play Demelza in historical drama Poldark. “I was kind of thinking about her and about how best to get into it and I really wanted to change myself up a bit and I was like, go for a redhead!” she explained.
O’Leary teased that she had locked herself into the hair colour now, and the star laughed: “If I went blonde I’d never work again!”
