Elle Fanning closed out her Cannes fashion parade by putting a French Riviera twist on the classic ‘70s goddess gown. On Saturday, May 25, the All The Bright Places actress stopped traffic on the red carpet, posing in a sheer Gucci Cruise dress with a stunning completely backless design at the 77th annual film festival’s closing ceremony. With her oversized bell-shaped chiffon sleeves and layers of sheer fabric flowing around her, Fanning–who also debuted a shorter, platinum cut for the event–looked nothing short of ethereal.

Part of the brand’s new Cruise 2025 collection, the star’s sheer Gucci gown featured a plunging neckline that subtly freed the nipple, billowing pleated sleeves, a see-through skirt that trailed behind her, and fabric that was gathered at her waist to create a delicate ruched effect. The outfit was completely sheer, except for a pair of matching white shorts that she wore under the dress. Fanning also gave a sartorial shout-out to the south of France with the gown’s print: sunny white and yellow daisies that gave it a subtle butter yellow hue.

The former child star showed off every angle of the retro-inspired chiffon number on the red carpet at Palais des Festivals, twirling to show off the Gucci gown’s dramatic low back and voluminous sleeves. Statement diamond earrings and a silver watch added some sparkle, as well as her subtly iridescent teal eyeshadow. Fanning kept the rest of her beauty look simple, styling her freshly chopped blonde bob with ‘70s-esque flipped up ends and adding a matte peach lip gloss.
