Ellen Page On Coming Out As Gay: ‘Being In The Closet Is So Toxic’

It was pretty amazing last year when actress Ellen Page came out as a lesbian after hiding her sexuality from everybody for years through fear of a backlash.

Which, y’know, is just heartbreaking to think about.

And now, with it being thought that many celebrities choose to stay ‘in the closet’ rather than come out as gay and risk their career, Ellen has spoken out about what a toxic thing closeting is, and just how rubbish it made her feel.

You go, girl - we literally love her for being so vocal about this.

Speaking on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night, the ‘Juno’ star explained what it was like to now be ‘out’: “I feel so grateful for it, I feel so grateful to feel how I feel now, compared to how I felt as a closeted person. It’s a nice place to be.”

Speaking about life before coming out, she added: “I was sad, it is toxic and I wish that no-one would have to live that way.”

We couldn’t agree more.

The 28-year-old also went on to admit that she felt “lucky” to now be able to publicly date somebody of the same sex, with herself and girlfriend Samantha Thomas making many public appearances together.

Ellen revealed: “To love someone openly, to hold someone’s hand walking down the street, it’s a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful thing, and I’m just lucky enough to have someone in my life as special as her.”

No we’re not crying, you are…. WELP.

The amazing Ellen is set to receive the prestigious National Vanguard Award from the Human Rights Campaign in Washington D.C. next Saturday from U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
