Who Is Ellie Goulding's Estranged Husband? All About Caspar Jopling
Ellie Goulding announced she separated from her husband Caspar Jopling in February 2024 after over four years of marriage
Ellie Goulding and her husband, Caspar Jopling, announced they were separating after over four years of marriage in February 2024.
While Goulding has made a name for herself as a Grammy-nominated singer, Jopling has carved out his own successful career as an art dealer. Despite their high-profile professions, the former couple's romance began like an ordinary one — full of shy moments.
After meeting through mutual friends in 2016, Goulding and Jopling took their time getting to know each other. As the "Love Me Like You Do" singer recalled to The Guardian, they walked around many art galleries in complete silence in the beginning until they eventually overcame their timidness and their relationship effortlessly took off.
When the two got engaged in 2018, Jopling dedicated an Instagram post to her, writing, “I get to spend the rest of my life with this truly extraordinary and beautiful, beautiful person. No one has ever made me feel more full of life, knowledge, happiness, or love. There is no one I have ever been more complete with and there is no one I will ever feel more complete with.”
In an interview with Glamour UK, the pop star revealed their companionship grew since they wed in 2019, calling their marriage “mature." She added, “We talk things through, and we never argue. ... We talk about why we might disagree on something."
However, by 2024, Goulding announced they were no longer together in an Instagram Story.
"In light of recent stories, I feel I have been left with no choice but to let you all know that Caspar and I privately separated some time ago," she wrote.
So who is Ellie Goulding’s husband? Here's everything to know about Caspar Jopling and his relationship with the singer.
He grew up in Yorkshire
Goulding might be a name recognized across the world, but Jopling is no stranger to fame: his family is well-known in England.
Jopling’s father is the Honorable Nicholas Jopling of Yorkshire, whose own father is politician Thomas Michael Jopling — a member of the House of Lords in the United Kingdom.
Meanwhile, Jopling's mother is Jayne Warde-Aldam of Yorkshire, whose family owns country manor Frickley Hall and has royal connections.
Jopling grew up in Yorkshire with his parents and sisters. Most notably, his sister Tamara Meade won a Primetime Emmy for her makeup work on Netflix's Wednesday.
He’s an art dealer
Jopling's interest in art began at a young age, and he spent his teenage years collecting pieces while attending the prestigious Eton College in the U.K.
Afterward, he studied at Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history of art and architecture, and film studies in 2014, according to his LinkedIn.
Upon graduation, he interned at Christie's before joining Sotheby’s at the New York City office, where he spent “his time between the Contemporary Arts Department and the office of the CEO,” per his bio.
At Sotheby’s, Jopling sold contemporary and modern art through auctions and private sales. During his five years there, he amassed a list of clients throughout the United States and Europe.
He took a break from work when he returned to the classroom to earn an MBA from the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School in 2019. After finishing the program the following year, Jopling eventually landed at White Cube gallery, an art space founded by his uncle Jay Jopling in London in 1993.
Today, Goulding's husband works on strategy for the company, which has additional locations in Hong Kong and Paris.
They met in 2016
Goulding and Jopling met at a dinner with friends in New York in 2016. At the time, the singer was at the end of a tour and contemplated going to the event. “I was exhausted that night and I almost didn’t go," she told Tatler in 2023.
Still, Goulding went, and Jopling caught her eye, but they took their relationship slow as they got to know each other.
Several months after their first encounter, they went on a few dates in London, and Jopling introduced her to some art galleries. Goulding said they “were painfully shy around each other in the beginning,” adding, “Once we had overcome that, we realized that we were really meant to be together – he’s very romantic.”
Speaking with The Guardian in 2020, Goulding revealed they didn’t experience love at first sight. She also shared that although they spent a lot of time walking around galleries in silence, they didn't doubt their feelings.
"It was the thing I’ve been waiting for, but it wasn’t like I was waiting for that scenario – I was waiting for Casper," the "Lights" vocalist said. "He just saw me. He sees me in a way that I’ve always wanted to be seen.”
They married in 2019
After 18 months of dating, the couple got engaged in August 2018. They publicly celebrated their engagement with a traditional announcement in the marriage section of the U.K.’s The Times newspaper.
“The engagement is announced between Caspar, son of The Hon Nicholas Jopling of Yorkshire and Mrs Jayne Warde-Aldam of Yorkshire, and Elena, daughter of Mr Arthur Goulding of Herefordshire and Mrs Tracey Sumner of West Midlands,” it read.
Goulding and Jopling wed in August 2019 in North Yorkshire, England, surrounded by a large group of family and friends, including A-listers like Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Sienna Miller.
Some members of the royal family attended as well, including Princess Eugenie alongside her husband Jack Brooksbank and her mother Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.
For the ceremony, Goulding wore an elegant long-sleeve white Chloé gown designed by Natacha Ramsay-Lévi that featured a long train and high neck collar. Jopling opted for a suit by Huntsman with a navy tie.
The couple posted a sweet photo of themselves kissing at the altar on social media. On his Instagram post from the wedding, Jopling kept his message simple with the caption, “Thankful for everyone and everything, especially you.”
Goulding’s Instagram post included a message that she had “married the love of my life,” continuing, “Thank you eternally to everyone involved in such a special time.”
He’s a dad
In February 2021, when she was already 30 weeks along, Goulding and Jopling revealed the exciting news that they were going to be parents.
Goulding talked to Vogue about the surprise pregnancy, which they found out about on their first wedding anniversary in August 2020.
“Becoming pregnant kind of made me feel human. I want a better word than womanly, [but] – I have curves I’ve never had before. I’m enjoying it. My husband’s enjoying it," the singer said.
Goulding and Jopling celebrated the arrival of their son, Arthur Ever Winter Jopling, on April 29, 2021. The following week, the art dealer announced the news on his Instagram story. “Mum and baby both health and happy ... Extremely grateful," he wrote.
In a 2023 interview with PEOPLE, Goulding opened up about her struggles with anxiety and how being around Jopling and Arthur helped improve her mental health.
“He’s way more rational and pragmatic than me,” she said about her husband. “I delve constantly in the past and worry about the future. It makes for good songwriting, but it doesn’t make for good mental health.”
He’s athletic
Aside from studying art at Harvard, Jopling was also on the men's crew team. Years after graduating, he spotted a photo of himself rowing at Heathrow Airport and shared it on Instagram in 2017.
He continued his passion for the sport while attending Oxford University, where he was on the boat race team, according to Goulding's interview with The Guardian.
Speaking with Tatler in 2023, she also noted that they had a gym complete with a Hydrow rowing machine and a Peloton at their home in Gloucestershire.
When she talked about her own exercise routine, she said, “I could never compare myself to Caspar because he’s an athlete. But he does increase my drive and motivation because watching him train is awe-inspiring.”
They are friends with Princess Eugenie
Back in 2016, Jopling shared a picture of Princess Eugenie on Instagram at Art Basel Miami with the caption, “Day 1 done #ABMB.”
Two years later, Goulding and Jopling attended Eugenie’s wedding to Brooksbank and Eugenie and Brooksbank attended Goulding and Jopling’s wedding as well. In July 2020, the two couples were spotted on a double date at Casa Cruz in the Notting Hill neighborhood in London.
Over the years, Goulding has also developed a friendship with her. The "Starry Eyed" singer spoke to Tatler in 2023 about sharing parenting advice and tips with Eugenie, who gave birth to her first child, August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, two months before her.
“There’s a huge sense of camaraderie among new mums, not only dealing with being pregnant, but then breastfeeding and just figuring it out,” Goulding said. “It seems like motherhood is a time when you can never say too much about what’s going on, and I’m grateful for that.”
He has a good sense of humor
While Goulding and Jopling generally keep their relationship private, she has opened up about their connection behind the scenes.
In a 2020 interview with Vanity Fair, Goulding said, “We have a very shared sense of humor, which really helps. We like slapstick humor and to play pranks on each other, and that never falters – it’s just comfortingly silly.”
They announced their separation in February 2024
In February 2024, both Goulding and Jopling announced they had separated several months earlier on their respective Instagram Stories.
"We remain the closest of friends and have been successfully co-parenting with our sons best interests at heart," Goulding wrote. "We are committed to protecting our family privacy and thank people in advance for respecting our wishes - we won't be commenting further. Thank you."
She also reposted Jopling's statement from his story where he reiterated their desire for privacy and their focus on co-parenting their son.
"Hi people - hope you're having a good day," he wrote. "I feel (sadly) that I need to say something on mine and Ellie's current relationship, that I hope more than anything will make any final tabloid speculation disappear. Ellie and I made the decision to separate some time ago."
He added that he also still considered Goulding a close friend and that he would not be sharing more on the topic.
