She posted: "The speed and intensity of the city caused me to burn out after 15 years in London. I need time out to regroup, recharge and restart.
"I've been back in my home town Aberdeenshire for the last few months back at the piano I had as a child immersing myself in the power of music.
"To know where you want to go, I realised I need to go back where I came from."
The 'Heaven' singer added: "My new single Roots coming soon. I hope it resonates with you as it does with me."
Emeli's fifth album How Were We To Know was released in November, with the four-time Brit Award winner having released her debut album back in 2012.
Fans were quick to respond with excitement, and one fellow north-east star was also delighted by the announcement.
Aberdeen's Annie Lennox commented: "Oh my!!!! This is SOOOO special Emeli!!!! I LOVE that you're there again."
One fan added: "You canna beat Aberdeenshire though" while another commented: "So honest to be sharing your story Emeli.
"Absolutely love Roots - very thought-provoking, emotional and makes me proud to be Scottish and appreciate what our beautiful country has to offer."
Another added: "I feel this sentiment so much as someone who has lived away from Aberdeenshire in London/ Dubai/Houston.
"Returning to Aberdeenshire is always such a restorative thing. Love it here. Can’t wait to hear the new single."
