Emergency Services have issued an update on a fire at a Linwood recycling centre as efforts to make the site safe continue into this afternoon (Monday).

Crews were called to the area at around 9pm on Sunday (June 23) following reports of a fire in a commercial building.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland have released statements on the continued work to extinguish the blaze at the WEEE Solutions site on Burnbrae Road.

Firefighters have been tackling the fire since around 9.12pm on Sunday, with five appliances still at the scene. It follows a major multi-agency operation which saw police and ten fire appliances mobilised to the scene throughout the night.

We reported earlier today that smoke could still be seen rising from the specialist electrical and battery recycling treatment facility near Paisley. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Emergency crews had previously advised that locals stay inside and keep their windows and doors closed. This has now been listed, however, they are still urging people to stay away from the area.

Police Scotland are assisting Scottish Fire and Rescue Services with traffic management. Burnbrae Road is closed at the Linclive Interchange and the cycle path behind the industrial estate remain closed.

It comes as residents previously reported hearing 'pops and explosions' from the site as smoke could be seen as far as Glasgow City Centre. One resident told Glasgow Live: "I was scared with the amount of smoke coming off the building and the loud banging noises coming from it. I have a baby at home so it made me very concerned."

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "We are assisting Scottish Fire and Rescue Services with traffic management due to an ongoing fire within Linwood Industrial Estate. Burnbrae Road is closed at the Linclive Interchange. The cycle path behind the industrial estate remains closed also.

"The fire was reported around 9.10pm and there are no reported injuries. Emergency services remain in attendance and enquiries are ongoing.

"Local residents are advised to avoid the area, however windows and doors no longer need to be kept closed."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "Five appliances are currently in attendance at the town's Burnbrae Road, with crews working to extinguish the fire. Local residents are asked where possible to avoid the vicinity, but no longer need to keep windows and doors closed and can now go outdoors.

"At its height, ten fire appliances were mobilised to the scene of the fire after the alarm was raised at 9.12pm on Sunday, 23 June, to reports of a fire in a commercial building."
