Emma Corrin faces backlash after posing on Harpers' Bazaar cover with unshaven armpits

Emma Corrin's armpits are sparking debates online.

The 28-year-old Crown star (who uses they/them pronouns) became the center of online attention on May 22 when they were seen posing on the cover of Harper's Bazaar’s Freedom Issue with their grown-out armpit hair front and center. The look was all the more emphasized with Corrin in a Miu Miu tank top and briefs.

When the cover dropped, haters flocked to the outlet's Instagram post to express their dismay with Corrin’s unshaven appearance, some claiming it to be unhygienic and others flat-out arguing that it wasn't a respectable pose.

However, there were plenty of fans who came to Corrin’s defense.

“Always blows my mind to see people losing their's over body hair,” one wrote. “This isn’t ‘woke,’ it's the origins of human and nature, grow up!” another added, referring to some of the negative comments suggesting Corrin wanted to make a provocative statement rather than simply be a person who grows hair on their body and embracing it.

Corrin is not the first star to have made such a liberating statement on a magazine cover. In fact, many have come before them.

In April 2018, Rachel McAdams did a photo shoot for Bustle in which she put her hairy armpits on full display. She also asked the publication to minimally edit her images.

“This is my body, and I think that's so important to reflect back out to the world," McAdams said of her decision, which she made as a mom of two deciding to love her body and not as someone trying to prove a point to the public.

Corrin hasn’t addressed the criticism, but did open up to Harper’s Bazaar about receiving online hate.

“The vitriol is worse than I anticipated,” Corrin said in reference to the reactions they received after they first identified as LGBTQ+ in April 2021 (Corrin is non-binary) and later changed their pronouns on Instagram.

“Even though we like to think we’re in a progressive society, a lot of what we’re seeing is increasingly a step back.”
