Emmerdale is marking a milestone birthday this year by unveiling a special new logo with the promise of big events to come.

The ITV soap is celebrating 50 years on air and showed off a 50th birthday logo on Tuesday, sharing it with the caption: "Our birthday year has begun! Watch out for lots of exciting things happening later in the year, but for now we’re excited to reveal our birthday logo."

Yorkshire Dales-set soap Emmerdale began airing in 1972 and last week marked a schedule change by moving to a regular 7.30pm slot nightly from Monday to Friday.

The soap's beloved village pub The Woolpack has just had a 50th birthday facelift, too - it was destroyed in an explosion earlier in the year, but has now reopened under new owners Charity and Ryan who debuted a modern interior and accessible features including a ramp and dropped height bar.

Known as Emmerdale Farm until 1989, the soap has featured some shocking storylines over the years, the most famous being the Emmerdale plane crash in 1993 which drew comparisons to the Lockerbie bombing.

On the 10th anniversary of the plane crash another dramatic twist saw Sheree Murphy's character Tricia Dingle killed off in a storm, and other notable disasters and deaths have included the Hotten bypass crash, Val Pollard (Charlie Hardwick) being killed in a mirror maze and Ross Barton's (Michael Parr) acid attack.

It has also treated talking point storylines sensitively with Ashley Thomas' (John Middleton) battle with dementia and Belle Dingle's (Eden Taylor-Draper) mental health issues both winning praise.

The 40th anniversary episode was marked by Carl King's (Tom Lister) death, two births and a wedding in 2012, so fans will be looking forward to seeing how the soap's writers up the ante to mark its half century.

Emmerdale continues from Monday to Friday at 7.30pm on ITV.
