On tonight's Emmerdale Rhona Goskirk and Pete Barton were left with tough questions about the future of their relationship.

After Rhona (Zoe Henry) was left injured following a the tractor crash at Butler's Farm, she had been faced with more worrying health news.

While she made it though her surgery, the doctors discovered she had extensive fibroids (non-cancerous growths) in her womb and may need a hysterectomy.

The news came as a shock to Rhona and her boyfriend Pete, however Pete told her he'd be fine helping to raise her son Leo and not having children of his own.

But tonight Rhona was visited in hospital by Vanessa, who she confided in about her health news.

When Vanessa asked how Pete felt about her having a hysterectomy Rhona said she had always been up front about not wanting anymore children and even though Pete initially did want kids he had accepted this.

However Vanessa did admit that despite not wanting kids, it was still a shock to have the choice taken from her.

Meanwhile Pete was also struggling with the news and confided in Paddy. Pete told him that he thought he was alright with not having children, but he wasn't so sure anymore.

Reflecting on his own experiences, Paddy told him to remember that biology wasn't everything and even if Rhona wouldn't be able to have a child, there were still other ways he could become a father.

Later Pete went to visit Rhona in the hospital and told her that he loved her no matter what and the surgery wouldn't change anything.

When Rhona asked him what he meant, Pete said they always had the option to adopt, but Rhona said she thought he'd told her he was alright with them not having children.

But sadly it turned out Pete didn't realise that Rhona not wanting to have any more children meant that even adoption was out of the question.

This made Rhona realise that Pete had been hiding how much he does really want to be a father and even though they love each other she had to tell him that if his heart is set on having children then, "I don't think we can be together."

Viewers were heartbroken at the sad end to Rhona and Pete's relationship.

Now it seems him and Rhona are over for good, will the split make Pete reconsider his future in the village?

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
