Emmerdale has denied reports claiming it is planning a live episode that will depict the death of a fan favourite character this summer.

Last month, the soap revealed that Emma Barton, played by actress Gillian Kearney, would be bowing out of the Dales later this year.

However, despite tabloid speculation that a rumoured death for Emma would take place in a live special this summer, a spokesperson for the soap has told Digital Spy that this is not the case.

"Emmerdale has no plans for a live episode," they said.

The ITV show previously confirmed to Digital Spy that Emma's exit wouldn't happen until the end of the year, as producers had a "major storyline" planned for her character in the autumn.

"Gillian Kearney was intending to leave Emmerdale in May 2017," they said. "We asked her to extend her contract to play the last chapter of Emma Barton's story.

"Gillian was happy to stay with the programme to the end of the year in the knowledge she would be involved in a major storyline this autumn."

Emma arrived in the Dales back in 2015, but has been on borrowed time after causing last year's devastating road pile-up that led to James losing his life.

Emmerdale continues tonight (June 26) at 7pm on ITV.
