Emmerdale plans longer-term future for Rhona's new story

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale's executive producer Jane Hudson has confirmed that Rhona Goskirk's recent emotional storyline isn't over.

Rhona had her world turned upside-down this month when her ex-husband Gus paid a visit to the village, asking for help to become a father.

Gus, who is now married to a woman called Lucy, asked about using the frozen embryos that he and Rhona still had stored from IVF treatment during their time as a couple.

Rhona, who'd thought the embryos had been destroyed, gave some consideration to the idea when she learned that Gus and Lucy were desperate to start a family of their own but couldn't conceive naturally. However, she later told the pair that she wouldn't give her consent for the embryos to be used.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media at an Emmerdale press event, Hudson confirmed: "There is a long way to go with that story. It's one of those stories that when you think it's ended, it probably hasn't. It's a fascinating story and I think Zoe [Henry, who plays Rhona] is a brilliant actress.

"We always want to find the next big story and I think this is Rhona's next big story. It's going to be one that really captures the viewers."

Rhona made her decision after her husband Marlon helped her to realise that she wouldn't be able to stay away from Gus and Lucy if the plan was successful and one of the embryos became a child.

Zoe Henry recently gave her own thoughts on the story's future, explaining: "I certainly hope it gathers pace – I don't actually know, but I thought that Alan [McKenna] who played Gus was brilliant.

"This storyline really provoked conversations on set amongst the crew – and with me and other cast members. It's really interesting. It's a real headspin, if you like. Because there's no right or wrong answer and I can see every side of this story. I can see it from Rhona's point of view, Marlon's, Lucy's, Gus's.

"I would love to see that it has legs. I think it could potentially be problematic for Marlon and Rhona – how could it not? But I think it'd certainly be a lot of fun and very interesting to play, so watch this space."

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
