Emmerdale star addresses calls for Meena Jutla to return

Emmerdale star Rebecca Sarker has weighed in on fans calling for her on-screen sister to return to the soap.

Sarker plays GP Manpreet Sharma on the ITV series. Last year, Manpreet suffered a terrifying kidnapping ordeal at the hands of her own sister Meena Jutla, played by Paige Sandhu.

Meena's wrongdoings, which included murder, were eventually discovered, landing her behind bars and giving Manpreet the chance to process her trauma.

While Manpreet is definitely enjoying not having to worry about Meena wreaking havoc in the village, Sarker and Sandhu couldn't be closer in real life.

Speaking to Daily Star at the TRIC Awards, Sarker revealed her former co-star may not be thinking about reprising the role of Meena at the moment.

"I'm seeing Paige next week so hopefully she'll have some insider information for me!" Sarker said of Jutla's possible return.

"I think she's probably onto other things for now, I'm sure viewers would love to see her return though."

Sarker added that Manpreet is needing a "bit of chill" after Meena, though she conceded: "Nobody likes happiness in soapland! It's quite the opposite of real life."

Speaking about her bond with Sandhu, Sarker said they became friends while working together and regularly see each other.

"We keep in touch, we couldn't not!" she said.

"You become friends on a show like this, when you work so closely to someone it's absolutely natural that you would keep in touch."

In March, the two friends reunited with former co-star Fiona Wade, who exited the soap in January after having played Priya Kotecha for 11 years.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
