Emmerdale star Emma Atkins calls for Charity and Mackenzie future

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale star Emma Atkins has revealed that she wants to see her character Charity Dingle have a future with Mackenzie Boyd.

Last month, the couple reunited following the perilous car accident that saw Mackenzie save Charity over his then-partner Chloe Harris.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media, Atkins shared her appreciation for the couple — and her co-star — when asked if she thought Charity and Mack were better off together or apart.

"I love working with Lawrence [Robb, who plays Mackenzie], and so I'm going to say together," she said.

"Just because when they first came together, they were brought together through mischief, fun and mayhem. There was this element of one-upmanship, and it just had this sparkiness that I love doing as an actor. So that element, I don't ever want to disappear, even though they're a couple.

"Because sometimes in soap, you put a couple together, and then they just go, 'What do we do with them?' That's why you're with people, isn't it, for that spark? So I think, because we've got that, I would choose to always hang out with him."

Atkins continued: "I think we do create a nice energy and dynamic. The feedback seems to be that people love them together.

"But then, at the same time, conflict is always more interesting in soap. So I think there's enough scope for us to have that conflict."

Of course, Charity and Mack's future is very uncertain at the moment, with both characters in danger over the Christmas period.

Mackenzie is currently being held captive by Chloe's adoptive father, Damon 'Harry' Harris. In next week's episodes, the situation is set to escalate, with Charity taking a risk to save Mack.

Harry pulls out a gun to kill Mack, and after a scuffle with Charity, a gunshot is heard. Will the characters survive this ordeal?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
