Emmerdale star Isabel Hodgins has explained why Victoria Barton has second thoughts over lying in court for her brother Robert Sugden.

Worrying spoilers for next week's episodes have revealed that Victoria will start to question whether she's doing the right thing by backing up Robert's false story over his attack on Lee Posner.

Victoria has told police that Robert acted strictly in self-defence when he lashed out at Lee, but viewers know that this wasn't the case.

As Robert prepares for his plea hearing next week – and is even told to consider a guilty plea to get a lesser sentence – Victoria makes matters worse by wondering whether to change her story and tell the truth.

Speaking about the tense scenes ahead, Isabel explained: "Victoria is stressed and anxious. It's looking very serious for Robert and she is worried. She knows that she's going to have to lie, but that's eating her up inside because she doesn't want to.

"Robert thinks that he's untouchable because he's got Victoria's testimony, but his solicitor has something to say about that and that shakes him.

"Throughout all of this, Victoria always knew she was telling the truth about Lee raping her. She is a very honest person anyway and she tells it like it is. She doesn't like lying or being deceitful, so she's really struggling.

"Victoria is so family-orientated and she loves her brother so much. So does she lie and protect her family, or does she keep her core values and be honest?

"She feels that Lee has taken so much from her. He's now going to take her brother from her. But then if she lies, she's just like Lee because he lied about raping her."

Asked whether Victoria airs her concerns with Robert, Isabel replied: "At first she tells Robert not to worry – she can do it and she's got his back. But then she tells Robert that she loves him and wants everything to be okay, but she can't do it.

"Robert, being the good guy that he is, does take it on the chin. But the audience will see that Robert thinks it's game over. If he hasn't got Victoria, he's got nothing.

"I don't think this would affect Robert and Victoria's relationship, because he knows what's happened to her, he knows what kind of person she is and he knows what lying would do to her.

"But it's Diane, Aaron and Liv. Because Victoria isn't helping Robert, they're going to lose him – so is it going to cause friction between the other family members?"

On how Victoria would feel if Robert did go to prison, Isabel said: "She'd be devastated. He's her right arm. Her life is about to change, she's about to become a mother and she'd be doing all that without her big brother. That's heartbreaking."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays.
