Emmerdale star Lisa Riley explains throwbacks in Mandy and Paddy proposal story

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Emmerdale star Lisa Riley has explained the reasons for throwbacks in Mandy and Paddy Dingle’s proposal storyline.

The former married couple have been in a relationship for the past few months, though their relationship hit a rocky patch as Paddy admitted to kissing his estranged wife Chas.

Next week’s scenes will see Paddy attempt to make amends as he pops the question, with the latest proposal mirroring their previous betrothal as Mandy dresses up as Cinderella.

With their relationship potentially coming full circle, Riley spoke to TV Times about the latest scenes, revealing that she and her co-star Dominic Brunt had a hand in harkening back to the past.

“The truth is that Dominic and I talk about it all the time,” she began. “I think that’s probably why the producers and the writers wanted to emulate the 1999 proposal, because it’s one of those moments in soap history.

“I remember us being like Romeo and Juliet, with Mandy upstairs and Paddy downstairs in what is now Pollard’s shop, which was Mandy’s boutique back in the day. All those memories came flooding back.

“Mandy and Paddy have always had their Cinderella moments, and what’s so wonderful about this week is all these little moments are dropped in, which take you back to 1999. In the first proposal, Mandy didn’t lose her shoe like Cinderella – she lost her sparkly earring.

“This time, she puts her lucky earrings in. The dress she wears is a similar colour to the one she wore at the ball – we didn’t want to copy it identically. There are other things… when she sees Paddy in his suit, she says: ‘You’ve always been my Prince Charming.’

“It just felt so correct. It’s what the audience has been waiting for, and it’s what we’ve been working towards. And it’s extra special to be on this journey with Dom; he is my bestest friend.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
