Emmerdale star Lucy Pargeter teases Chas' dangerous new story

Emmerdale spoilers follow.

Lucy Pargeter has opened up about Chas Dingle's potentially dangerous new relationship in Emmerdale.

Chas is set to hit it off with local gangster Harry, unaware that he recently organised a botched hit on her half-brother Caleb Miligan and tried to hurt brother Cain Dingle as well.

Harry isn't honest about his identity (he takes on the pseudonym 'Simon') and even ends up spending the night at Chas's place when he makes out that he's had too much to drink.

Teasing these storylines, Lucy admitted that Chas could be vulnerable to Harry's advances because she's "very lonely" and "misses companionship" now that ex Paddy is back with Mandy.

"She goes to The HOP to have a drink after going to Grace's grave. He turns up and offers to buy her a drink. He seems to be alright, he's buying her a drink, he's listening," she said. "She likes to talk about herself and he's an open ear and a companion for drinking and purging of her sadness.

"He then comes back to The Woolpack. He says he's lost a child as well. But reality hits - Chas realises she's had too much to drink. She says Harry can stay over because he's had a drink, but he needs to stay on the sofa. He's absolutely fine and says it was just nice to have a chat. Chas has no suspicions about him..."

There's an awkward moment the next morning as Paddy has it out with Chas after he finds out that Harry had slept over in his estranged wife's home.

"Paddy is not impressed. I found it hard to understand his reaction," Lucy revealed. "I don't know where his reaction is coming from - whether it's jealousy or disgust that she had someone over.

"Her reaction is: 'I'm sorry, you're with Mandy, if I choose to have someone over... nothing happened but even if it did, it's fine'. She takes the keys off him and says he can't just let himself in from now on. She's very defiant and says nothing happened and it's none of his business anyway."

Lucy praised Harry actor Robert Beck for being "fabulous" and "so professional" on set, but cast doubts on Chas getting into anything serious right now.

"I think she's fine on her own at the moment," she said. "It'd be nice for her to have the odd fleeting guest coming in and out! But I don't think she needs anybody really. She's okay on her own."

Asked whether Chas is still being punished by "the soap gods" for her affair with Al last year, Lucy argued: "I don't know if she needs payback from the soap gods or payback from the viewers but I can't see the viewers feeling too sorry for her!"

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
