Nicola Wheeler appeared on This Morning today to vouch for Emmerdale at the upcoming British Soap Awards.

However, the Nicola King actress shocked everyone when she said she wanted another show to win the prestigious Best Soap award.

When asked if they could scoop the gong once again, Wheeler responded: "Maybe we can but I think it's Doctors' time, personally. I think it's Doctors.

"Nicola King won being the underdog and I think it's time for Doctors to win, being the underdog. So maybe if we win all the other awards and they win Best Soap?"

Her comments were especially brave as she made them in front of This Morning soaps guru – and Emmerdale writer – Sharon Marshall.

Phillip Schofield pointed it out, asking Sharon: "Are they allowed to say you should vote for another soap without getting into trouble?"

"What do we do with that bus that is on the edge of a cliff that we are going to storyline next week?" she responded.

Speaking about her character's relationship with on-screen husband Jimmy, Nicola also teased some upcoming storylines.

Discussing their future happiness, she said: "We've actually just had a story meeting so there is a little bit of shade coming into their relationship. I'm not saying what – not as shady as Cain!"

Emmerdale currently airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with an extra episode at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

This Morning airs on weekdays and Sundays at 10.30am on ITV.
