The show returned this week in the US with a jaw-dropping flash-forward showing Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) being shot at the beginning of the episode and seemingly losing consciousness at the end.

The rest of the season will presumably lead up to the revelation of who shot Lucious, but producer Brett Mahoney has coyly told Entertainment Weekly that Lucious "looks pretty dead" in his final seconds on-screen.

Addressing the timeline, Mahoney clarified: "That is from nine months forward, which will be the series finale. But I can tell you that you will know who is holding that gun in [episode 11]."

He also teased that the scene will be revisited later in the season as viewers find out who pulled the trigger on Lucious.

"We will see quite a bit [of the scene]," Mahoney said. "I think the contrast between the coffin last season and this flash-forward is there's a lot more twists and turns and drama that I think will shock people.

"And you don't necessarily have to wait as long for the answers."

Mahoney also recently confirmed that the writing team has already figured out "the final endgame", while hinting that it could change during filming.

"It's going to be big," he promised to EW. "We're really excited by a lot of the stuff we're doing. The one thing about it being the final season and it being Empire, we want it to feel big and dynamic, and so that is what we're trying to achieve."

Empire airs on Fox in the US.
