An empty Edinburgh hair salon is to be turned into a new burger and steak joint after plans were granted by the council.

Following a change of use application validated in January, the council has now approved proposals to turn the former Formo salon, on Home Street, into a new fast food business.

Chilo's Burgers, based in Glasgow, will be operating the unit in what will be their first Edinburgh location. According to a planning statement, the Scottish-owned brand specialises in "smash burger" cuisine.

Details of the shopfront elevations also reveal Chilo's will be adverting the sale of steaks and desserts after striking up a following in the west of Scotland. The owners have proposed opening times of 11am-11pm and look to target a "broad customer base."

The planning statement continues: "Planning Services UK proposes establishing a branch of the "Smash Burger" franchise Chilo's at 57 Home Street, a concept known for its unique approach to classic burgers. The franchise has expanded, with a flagship store in Glasgow and a recent opening in Uddingston.

"It plans to open in Greenock, Cumbernauld, and Stirling, as well as this location in Edinburgh. The Edinburgh branch, targeting an 11am to 11pm operation, aims to cater to a diverse clientele, particularly students from the nearby Napier University's Merchiston Campus.

"The campus's extensive facilities and large student population align with the franchise's operational hours. "Chilo's" intends to provide a dynamic dining experience, contributing to Edinburgh's food culture and local economy. The franchise's strategic location and unique offerings are expected to make it a culinary landmark."
