England set for huge tactical shift to leave Man United stars Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw sweating

Manchester United duo Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw are sweating on their places in England's Euro 2024 quarter-final clash against Switzerland amid a reported radical change in tactics by Gareth Southgate.

The Three Lions have stumbled to the last eight of the competition with some uninspiring performances. They won their opener against Serbia but have since drawn twice with Denmark and Slovenia, and were within 90 seconds of crashing out of the competition against Slovakia before Jude Bellingham rescued them deep in injury time.

Southgate is now reportedly planning on ripping up the formation that he has used in the previous four games in an admission that it hasn't worked so far. Sky Sports claim he is set to go with a back three against the Swiss on Saturday night.

Man City duo Kyle Walker and John Stones will be joined by Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa in a three-man central defence. Konsa comes in for the suspended Marc Guehi.

Ahead of them, Southgate has to decide on who partners Declan Rice. Mainoo started against Slovakia and was one of the few players to emerge with credit, but Sky report that Southgate is weighing up who is best alongside Rice to ensure the midfield isn't over-ran in a 3-4-3 or a 3-4-2-1 formation. That could mean Conor Gallagher gets a recall or Jude Bellingham is dropped deeper.

Bellingham and Phil Foden could operate as joint No.10s behind Harry Kane as Southgate looks to get the best out of both his players.

Sky also report that Southgate has yet to decide who will play as wing-backs, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Bukayo Saka, Kieran Trippier and Eberechi Eze possibilities to play in those roles, while Shaw's inclusion has also not been ruled out. The Man United left-back has yet to kick a ball this tournament, but is reportedly available for selection after recovering from injury despite not playing for United since February.

Speaking to talkSPORT, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford said: "He was ready to come on (against Slovakia). But I'm not the manager. He's ready, Luke says he's ready. There will have to be changes with Marc Guehi suspended but that's what a 26-man squad is all about. Everyone's got to be ready and everyone is ready to play."
