England's Sam Curran tests negative for Covid-19 after feeling unwell

Sam Curran has tested negative for Covid-19, easing concerns that the virus had infiltrated England’s “biosecure” training camp at the Ageas Bowl.

Curran felt unwell on Wednesday night after batting on the first evening of England’s intra-squad warm-up match. He was instructed to self-isolate in his room at the team’s on-site hotel. The 22-year-old was assessed by medical staff and tested for coronavirus on Thursday, having passed three previous tests at the camp.

The Surrey all-rounder has now been given the all-clear again after recovering from an apparent sickness bug, and will rejoin the group in net sessions over the weekend. Curran has played no part in the remainder of the intra-squad match between teams captained by Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes.

“Sam Curran has tested negative following his Covid-19 test from Thursday,” an England and Wales Cricket Board statement read. “He will now return to training over the next 24-48 hours and will be closely monitored by the team doctor. Curran will receive a further test on Sunday with the rest of the playing and management group.”

Rory Burns batted through most of the final morning of England’s warm-up match as he attempted to reassert his claims for a Test recall next week. The Surrey captain made 35 from 77 balls in his first innings for six months, after rupturing ankle ligaments while playing football.

Burns was dismissed by Moeen Ali just before lunch, while there was worse news for Joe Denly, who was pinned lbw second ball by Jack Leach. Ollie Pope added 55 not out as Jos Buttler’s team declared on 200-6, a lead of 254 over Ben Stokes’ side. The match will conclude on Friday.
