A major rescue operation was launched in the English Channel this morning (June 6) after a boat carrying more than 80 people including children capsized. British and French vessels were dispatched to the scene after the boat sent a mayday signal to the Coastguard.

Helicopters and lifeboats took part in the rescue - at a location roughly halfway between Calais and Dover. Children are understood to have been among those struggling in the choppy waters.

No fatalities have been reported at this stage and it is so far unclear how serious any injuries are. However, as many as nine specialist ambulance vehicles were spotted heading towards the Kent coast at about 8am.
