A post about the Euros that was supposed to be a bit of 'banter' sparked a backlash from an England fan that saw the pub apologise. Leah Fitton and Ben Owen have run the Yr Harbour hotel in Cemaes since just before Covid hit in 2020.

Leah, 36, is England and Ben, 30, is Welsh so they enjoy having fun around the football and rugby. Yesterday they posted a picture before the England/Denmark game of Leah in her England strip and Ben wearing a Danish kit.

Alongside the pic, they said: "Who’s watching the game? Denmark v England. Of course Ben has bought a Denmark top!"

While most took it in the spirit it was meant one fan vowed to boycott the pub.

One person messaged to say that "English holidaymakers keep you in business" and that they were "furious" about the post. They said that family from England were due to stay at the pub but that they would no longer go ahead with the booking.

They added: "I will make it known on Tripadvisor that you don't like the English"(despite Leah actually being English).

It saw the pub explain and apologise today. They said: "We are extremely sorry if we have offended anyone with our post we posted yesterday!! This was supposed to be a bit of football banter because Leah is English and Ben is Welsh!!"

Leah told North Wales Live: "Me and Ben do it for the rugby and everything, it’s banter for all the locals and they love it! He’s ordered a Slovenia shirt!" England play Slovenia at the Euros next week.

When they posted the apology many jumped to their defence with the main complainant labelled a "snowflake" by one person. They added: "What’s wrong with people, surely they can see this is banter as always happens with any big football tournament."

An England fan added: "It’s called banter. Wouldn’t have it any other way!!! Hope he buys a top for every game now!

"Also not like us 'English' would be supporting Wales! Hopefully the Welsh don’t get offended by that comment and ban me from Wales!"
