Esher and Walton Labour candidate 'very shocked' if Liberal Democrats don't win

"I suspect the Liberal Democrats would win tonight here and I’d be shocked if it was anything else", said the Labour candidate for Esher and Walton on the night his party looked set to sweep to power. Yoel Gordon, speaking to SurreyLive, said he enjoyed the campaign despite going into it knowing it was very much a two-horse race.

He said: "The local campaign has been very enjoyable and I was really pleased to fight the seat. Esher and Walton is not the easiest place for a Labour candidate to fight but there's been good reception at hustings at doorstep.

"Issues here are the same as across the country. People are concerned about the NHS, The river pollution and the state of the Mole and Thames as well as what the water companies are doing. "Education struggles and primary schools struggling to keep and retain good staff.

"There's homelessness and foodbanks even in a very affluent area like Esher and Walton it is very much to the fore. Tactical voting has been very clear. I've had many people come up to me saying their Labour voters but they want to unseat the conservative and we're supporting Monica.

"Nationally it’s so far so good, it's still very early on in the results but there is certainly a move to Labour. I suspect Keir Starmer will be the new Prime Minister and overall I'm very very happy. Relieved and excited."

Now that the election campaign is over he said his going to give himself a few days to get back on to an even keel. He said: "I'm going to have a break. I'm very tired, on the assumption I don't win this evening. I suspect the Liberal Democrats would win tonight here and I’d be shocked if it was anything else."
