Essex to be hotter than Barcelona as 'yellow heat warning' in place

Residents in Essex could be treated to temperatures warmer than holiday hotspots in Spain over the coming days. The region is currently subject to a yellow heat health alert meaning there is increased risk to vulnerable people.

The warning came into force at 8am on Monday (June 24) and runs until 5pm on June 27. The afternoon sun could make temperatures warm across the county, including in Chelmsford where the Met Office says it could reach 27C on on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Such warm weather would make the city warmer than Barcelona where temperatures will peak at between 25C and 26C over the coming days. It would also be as warm as Istanbul in Turkey where temperatures are predicted to reach 27C.

Temperatures of around 29C are set to make the Portuguese city of Lisbon warmer than Chelmsford on Monday (June 24), but the Met Office says comparably warmer temperatures could be found in Essex on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said an "increasingly hot week" was on the way with some possibility of "uncomfortable for sleeping" conditions overnight Monday into Tuesday. He said: "There will be areas of clouds in London and the South East but where the sun breaks through the afternoon high of 28 could squeak to 29."

They added: "By Wednesday it's hotter again across the South with 30 degrees possible."
