Essex's stunning lesser-known beach which used to be just a patch of sand covered in weeds

With temperatures rising and the summer holidays fast approaching, Essex folk know they are lucky enough not to have to travel far to find a great beach. And Essex beaches just keep getting better.

There's one area in particular where visitors can't help but gush over its "well-cared for and spotless" beach. But this hasn't always been the case.

For those who want a quieter beach but still enough activities to keep the kids occupied, then Thorney Bay in Canvey Island might be a pleasantly surprising choice. The area used to be more of a baron patch of overgrown land but over time has developed into one of the most scenic and tranquil seaside spots on the island, thanks to a voluntary group made up of local islanders who now keep the beach area clean and tidy.
