Euphoria's Barbie Ferreira addresses struggle that led to her exit

Euphoria's Barbie Ferreira has admitted to feeling unsure over her character Kat Hernandez, after it was confirmed the star wouldn't be returning for the show's third season.

The actress, who announced her departure from the HBO teen drama last year, gave more insight into her exit in a chat with Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast.

"I don't think there was a place for her to go," Ferreira said of Kat.

"I think there were places she could have gone. I just don't think it would have fit into the show."

Ferreira was adamant not to play the "fat best friend" stereotype, but struggled to find satisfying, complex storylines for Kat.

"I don't know if it was going to do her justice, and I think both parties knew that I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don't want to play that, and I think they didn't want that either," she said.

"It was a struggle to find the continuation of her. So that was actually really hurtful, watching it and seeing the fans get upset."

"[Creator Sam Levinson] writes for, like, things that he relates to. I don't think he relates to Kat. I like Kat, so I get to go on my own path," the star added, explaining that leaving was "a good thing".

In the interview, Ferreira also weighed in on the toxic workplace rumours plaguing Euphoria, dismissing theories she walked off set.

"When people ask me about season 2, it's usually they come at me with, like, I was some sort of victim to season 2, and I'm always like, 'No, it's okay, promise'," she said.

"It's good. I actually did not walk off set. I did sprain my ankle once and had to go get an X-ray. Maybe that's what they mean?"

At the time of The Daily Beast's report alleging a toxic and unsafe working environment on the set of the second season, HBO released a statement, saying: "The well-being of cast and crew on our productions is always a top priority. The production was in full compliance with all safety guidelines and guild protocols.

"It's not uncommon for drama series to have complex shoots, and COVID protocols add an additional layer. We maintain an open line of communication with all the guilds, including SAG-AFTRA. There were never any formal inquiries raised."

The Unpregnant star first shared the news she'd leave Euphoria on her Instagram Stories in August last year.

"After four years of getting to embody the most special and enigmatic character Kat, I'm having to say a very teary eyed goodbye," Ferreira wrote in a message to her followers.

"I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today.

"I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. Love you Katherine Hernandez."

Euphoria airs on HBO in the US and on NOW and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
