There were hopes they would perform at the Eurovision Song Contest final and ABBA fans got their wish - sort of. The 68th edition of the world's biggest music competition on Saturday night (May 11) marked 50 years since the Swedish group won the Contest themselves.

Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad formed in Stockholm in 1972. Two years later and the group, is an acronym of the first letters of their first names arranged as a palindrome, were Sweden's first winner of Eurovision with their hit song, Waterloo.

And the rest, as they say, is history as they went on to become one of the most popular and successful musical groups of all time and are one of the best-selling music acts in the history of popular music.

With the anniversary of their win falling this year, after Loreen secured Sweden being the host country of Eurovision 2024 following her win in Liverpool last year with her song Tattoo, there were many crossing their fingers for one last performance from the group.

However, Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Frida didn't succumb to people's wishes and instead, the UK got another moment in the spotlight with Eurovision crossing live to London and to Abba Voyage, a virtual concert residency set in a purpose-built arena for the group.

And with the rendition of Waterloo also featuring three Eurovision favourites, viewers couldn't help but share their views on social media.

@GabbyMonaghan asked: "Anyone else feel that ABBA hologram is a tiny bit creepy?! #Eurovision2024@okumustinerci said: "Really don’t know how to feel about these ABBA avatars #Eurovision2024." @_Jim_Lewis wrote: "This ABBA bit with the creepy AI has been pulled straight out of Black Mirror #Eurovision2024."

@scattycarrot pleaded: "AI ABBA was creepy AF. PLEASE don't ever do that again #Eurovision2024." @pattipatti complained: "Weird CGI AI #ABBA. Very creepy. I would rather they not preform if this is what they gave us? lol #Eurovision2024." @Peterbixx added: "The ABBA holograms are weird. We could have just skipped to Carola, Charlotte and Conchita, would’ve been fine. Three queens of Eurovision. #Eurovision2024."

But one element of the performance made fans very happy. @MittenDAmour posted: "Conchita singing ABBA. My heart is exploding with glitter. #Eurovision2024." @mrbellyelliot shared: "CONCHITA WURST SINGING ABBA! This is why I love Eurovision! STUNNING AS EVER! #Eurovision2024." @MsIkkle added: "Conchita!! Doing ABBA!! I love it!! Go conchita!! #Eurovision2024."
