All the big name Tory MPs who've lost seats in the General Election have emerged through the night as Labour Party won by a landslide. The night went from bad to worse for the Tories as Grant Shapps, the defence secretary, has lost his seat in Welwyn Hatfield.

He was beaten by Labour’s Andrew Lewiwn, who got 19,877 votes (41%). Shapps got 16,078 votes (33%). Alex Chalk, the justice secretary, has lost in Cheltenham to the Liberal Democrats, becoming the first cabinet minster to lose his seat.

Below is every big name Tory who has lost their seat in a brutal night for the Conservative Party - with plenty more to come. Other big names at risk, according to Sky News and Beth Rigby, include the likes of Jacob Rees Mogg, and Penny Mordaunt too.

Sir Robert Buckland

The first big Tory casualty of the night, Sir Robert Buckland, took aim at "ill-discipline" within the Conservative Party after losing his seat. Sir Robert Buckland has taken aim at "ill-discipline" within the Conservative Party after losing his seat in Swindon South.

"I think that we have seen in this election an astonishing ill-discipline within the party," the former justice secretary said. "We can see articles being written before a vote is cast at the general election about the party heading for defeat and what the prognosis should be.

"It is spectacularly unprofessional, ill-disciplined. That is not the Conservative Party I joined and have been an active member of for now nearly 40 years." The former justice secretary was beaten by Labour's Heidi Alexander by 9,606 votes (see post at 00:14).

He had represented the constituency since 2010.

Alex Chalk

Justice Secretary Mr Chalk had a majority of just 981 coming into this election. He had been the MP for Cheltenham since the 2015 election, with his majority decreasing at each subsequent election. The Liberal Democrats had held the seat since 2010.

Mr Chalk is one of several major figures in the Conservative Party who are predicted to lose their seat by the exit poll, which is forecasting a Labour landslide.

Grant Shapps

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has lost his seat of Welwyn Hatfield to the Labour Party. He lost by a margin of 3,799 votes. He is the second cabinet casualty of the night, after Justice Secretary Alex Chalk also lost his seat. The BBC election results forecast suggests the Conservatives will have 154 MPs, down 218, while Labour will emerge as the largest party with 405 MPs. If confirmed, it would be the worst result for the Conservatives in modern history.

Penny Mordaunt

Penny Mordaunt, the Conservative leader of the House of Commons, has lost her seat of Portsmouth North. Her defeat is probably the most significant because she was seen as one of the strongest candidates to replace Rishi Sunak as leader.

Speaking after losing her seat, Ms Mordaunt - who had been tipped as a future Tory leadership contender - said her party had "taken a battering because it failed to honour the trust that people had placed in it".

She warned against "talking to an ever smaller slice of ourselves," adding, "if we want again to be the natural party of government, then our values must be the people's".

Jacob Rees Mogg

Former cabinet minister Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has lost his seat at the general election. He has been defeated by Labour's Dan Norris by over 5,000 votes. Rees Mogg thought the party had made a mistake by ousting Boris Johnson, who led it to victory in the 2019 election but was forced to step down as prime minister in 2022 following a series of scandals.

Former cabinet office minister Steve Baker, who BBC projections gave less than a 1% chance of holding onto his seat, said his party was having an “incredibly difficult night”.

Mark Harper

Mark Harper, the transport secretary, has lost his Forest of Dean seat to Labour. At the last election he was ahead of Labour here by 60% to 29%

Liz Truss

Liz Truss has lost in South West Norfolk. The former PM, who had a majority of more than 26,000 at the last election, was beaten by Labour by 630 votes.
