Every Scot has a duty on July 4 to help boot out this disgraceful Tory Government.

The Conservatives over the last five years are guilty of gross incompetence and unprecedented recklessness.

They promised to get Brexit done and made grand claims about how our lives would be transformed by leaving the EU. Britain has instead been isolated and become an international laughing stock.

We were promised prosperity for all and a rejuvenation of our public services. The NHS is now crumbling and poverty is at epidemic levels.

The last five years have been a nightmare for the hard-working majority. We have had to endure the indignity of not just one, but three, terrible Tory PMs.

History will judge Boris Johnson as a lying buffoon who should have been nowhere near Downing Street. He was incapable of telling the truth and resigned in disgrace.

He was the PM who imposed Covid restrictions, meaning many were unable to see their loved ones in their final moments, while others struggled with isolation.

While we did our bit, our NHS struggled and people were dying, Johnson and his cronies were partying in Downing Street.

But Johnson’s successor, Liz Truss, proved to be even worse. This zealot tried to impose her vile right-wing ideology on the country and ordinary folk suffered.

Voters, already struggling with the cost of living, were used as an experiment and her extreme policies saddled Scots with bigger mortgage bills and sky-high inflation.

And Sunak, despite portraying himself as the adult in the room, has been little better.

He is one of the richest men in Parliament and does not understand the lives of those he governs. He is a hostage of his party’s right wing and can’t escape their clutches. His panicked decision to call a July election is another sign he is scared of them.

Sunak has also insulted Scots by calling the election during the school holidays. He has wrecked the holiday plans of thousands of people simply to play politics.

We always suspected the Tories had contempt for Scots – now it’s confirmed. There is also a nagging feeling he is timing the election alongside the Euros to ride on the back of jingoism.

This election must be the moment when we vote for a better future. It should be the moment when we start to invest in public services, not run them down. It should be the time to create an economy that works for the many, not the rich minority.

Regardless of whether you intend to vote Labour or SNP, the goal must be ditching the Tories from office.

The choice at this election is whether Sunak or Labour leader Keir Starmer is PM. We are clear Starmer must be PM and only Labour can form an alternative government. Scots disagree on independence and they have been divided since 2014.

But this is an opportunity for us to come together to unite against the Tories Making Westminster free of Scots Tory MPs would be huge step towards kicking them out of office.

Scots have the chance to turn the page on a dark chapter in our country’s history. We should seize the moment and make history.
