Everybody’s Talking about Jamie review: Humour, heart and acceptance

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a vibrant, feel-good musical that combines humour, heart and a powerful message about acceptance and self-expression.

Set in Sheffield, the story follows 16-year-old Jamie New who dreams of becoming a drag queen despite the prejudices he faces.

It was inspired by the true story of Jamie Campbell and his journey to attend prom in drag.

The show has an infectious score, composed by Dan Gillespie Sells with lyrics by Tom MacRae, with songs that mix pop and musical theatre.

Stand-out songs of the show were And You Don't Even Know It and He's My Boy while the others didn’t leave the same lasting impact.

The cast delivers stellar performances, particularly the lead played by alternate Finton Flynn whose portrayal of Jamie is charismatic and deeply touching.

His journey is portrayed with authenticity and sensitivity.

The supporting cast is equally impressive with standout performances from Jamie's mother, Margaret, played by Rebecca McKinnis who provides the emotional depth and Sejal Keshwala who plays Ray and brings the comic relief.

The colourful and dynamic set design, combined with energetic choreography, creates an atmosphere that captures the spirit of Jamie’s vibrant imagination.

The costumes, particularly the drag outfits, add an extra layer of glamour to the show.

Beyond the glamour, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie tackles important themes such as bullying, acceptance and the courage to be yourself and handles these with a balance of humour and sincerity.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a joyful and uplifting experience that celebrates individuality.

It is a show that leaves the audience feeling inspired, whether you’re a fan of musicals or simply looking for a heartwarming story, this production is a must-see.
