When actress Sophie Turner and pop star Joe Jonas first got together in 2016 they quickly became an “It couple,” but over the weekend rumors began swirling about a possible divorce and the image of a happy, loving couple began to crumble.

The two started dating seven years ago and just a year later they were engaged. They tied the knot in 2019 in two beautiful wedding ceremonies – one in Las Vegas and another in France – and in the years since they have gone on to have two children.

When rumors of trouble in paradise began spreading, tabloids started playing the blame game and citing anonymous sources calling Turner a party girl, while internet-savvy fans began pouring over old interviews, photos and social media posts to try to pin down what went wrong. But amid a slew of speculation about why the seemingly happy couple was calling it splits, Jonas and Turner officially announced they were getting a divorce.

Scroll through for details about their divorce and why Sophie Turner is being called a "bad mother."

On Sunday, September 3, TMZ reported that the pair were breaking up and we started to get news that Jonas had retained a divorce attorney. By Tuesday the outlet was reporting that he had filed divorce paperwork with Florida’s Miami Dade County saying that the marriage is “irretrievably broken” and had hired Tiger Woods’ divorce attorney Tom Sasser.

Then after days of internet rumors, the couple released a joint statement on Instagram on Wednesday saying that they decided to “amicably end” their marriage. “There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”

Before the couple officially announced their impending divorce, rumors started spreading about what an amazing father Jonas is to their two children—girls, ages 3 and 1—and what a unfit mother Turner is. TMZ reported that Jonas was taking care of the children “pretty much all of the time” and the tabloid was told by an anonymous source that, "She likes to party, he likes to stay at home. They have very different lifestyles."

Couple these statements with photos coming out showing Jonas eating out with his two daughters in tow and he looks like the perfect father, while reports that there is Ring video footage that makes Turner look bad paints her as a bad mother—a cardinal sin for women in society’s eyes.

While Jonas may have had public opinion on his side for a moment, the pendulum started to swing in the other direction this week as people started to bristle at Turner being called a party girl and an unfit mother. Audra Heinrichs for Jezebel wrote, “In the case of Jonas and Turner, it seems the tabloids have settled on the same narrative—in short, that Turner has shirked her motherly duties in lieu of...turning up and that Joe is the Best Dad Ever™. The source? I have an idea and his name sounds like Schmoe Schonas.”

After Page Six, the Daily Mail and TMZ had all written about Turner’s supposed party animal ways, People quoted an anonymous source who told the magazine that Jonas was only watching their children because she was in the UK filming the ITVX series Joan, not because she couldn’t be bothered to put down a cocktail and pick up a kid as the tabloids implied.

Women are always held to a higher standard when it comes to parenting. A single photo of Jonas with his kids is enough to paint him as a devoted father and a single photo of Turner with a drink in her hand is all that's needed to call her a bad mom. But public sentiment seems to be turning against the pop star, with people making hilarious “TMZ reports…” memes that make fun of Jonas.
