Say aloha again to Moana, Maui and the island of Motunui because Moana 2 is coming!
That's right, one of our favourite Disney princesses will be making a surprise sail back to the cinema screen for a sequel to the 2016 animated musical. Plus, a separate live-action version is already in the works!

Is there a trailer for Moana 2?
Moana makes a splash in the first trailer for Moana 2, which dropped on 30 May and sees the Disney princess go on a brand new, oceanic adventure.

When was Moana 2 announced?
On 7th February, Walt Disney Company Chief executive Bob Iger announced that Moana 2 is coming to screens this year. "Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise," he said in the announcement. "And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theatres this November." Neither can we!
What is Moana 2 about?
The official plot says, "Moana 2 takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.
"After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced."
Who is in the Moana 2 cast?
We expect our favourite characters and voice-actors to return, including:
Auli’i Cravalho as Moana
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as Maui
Nicole Scherzinger as Sina
Temuera Morrison as Chief Tai
Confirming the news of her return, Auli’i took to Instagram in February 2024 to share a Reel of herself at Disney Studios, lip-syncing along to Beyoncé with the text, "That feeling when you’re officially returning to Motunui.
"We’re sailing WAY beyond the reef this November… ❤️🌀🐚 " she added in the caption.
As for the crew and writers, the sequel is set to be directed by Dave Derrick Jr., featuring music by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (they're the writers behind the viral Bridgerton musical, BTW!), Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina.
Lin Manuel-Miranda, who earned himself an Oscar nomination for his writing the song 'How Far I'll Go' in the first film will sadly not be back for the sequel.
