All About “Moana 2 ”Starring Dwayne Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho
From the cast to the release date, here's everything to know about the anticipated 'Moana' sequel
Prepare to return to the sea, because a Moana sequel is in the works.
Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed the upcoming film on Feb. 7, 2024, while also revealing exciting new details about what’s in store for the project.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” said Iger in a press release, “and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui.”
According to Variety, a follow-up to Moana was originally developed as a TV series but became a full-length movie after Iger was impressed with the footage.
This isn’t the only Moana project Disney currently has in the works; they previously announced plans for a live-action remake of the original, but Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original, will not be reprising her role for the live-action film. (A new actor will take on the part.)

Who is in the cast of Moana 2?
According to a press release from Disney, the new film will feature original characters such as Moana and Maui. Cravalho confirmed she would reprise her role in the second film in Februray 2024 as she posted a video of her in front of Walt Disney Animation Studios. It's also likely that Dwayne Johnson, who is playing Maui in the live-action film, will return for the sequel.
There will also be “a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers” meaning plenty of casting announcements are in store.
What is Moana 2 about?
Per the official tagline from Disney, the new film follows the titular character after she receives “an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors” and takes a journey “to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
While talking to PEOPLE in July 2024, Cravalho teased the sequel.
"[Moana is] growing. She is pushing herself even further beyond the reef," she said. "[I'm grateful to] come back to this character I know so well, but also take her on a completely different journey."
Who is directing Moana 2?
The new movie will be helmed by Dave Derrick Jr., who has a long history with Disney, previously working as a storyboard artist for the live-action Lion King, Encanto and Raya and the Last Dragon. Additionally, he was a story artist for the original Moana.
Who is writing music for Moana 2?
Moana 2 has a team of Grammy nominees and winners penning new music. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, who previously made waves with their Grammy-winning album The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical are listed as songwriters alongside Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i and Grammy winner Mark Mancina.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who wrote the songs including “How Far I’ll Go” for the first movie, isn’t expected to return with new songs for the sequel, according to Variety.
Is there a teaser for Moana 2?
On Feb. 7, 2024, Disney shared the first glimpse of the new movie, which depicted Moana returning to the sea in a teaser trailer.
Another teaser trailer was shared in May 2024, giving a more in-depth look at the story and new music.
When is Moana 2 being released?
The sequel is coming out sooner than you think: Moana 2 will be released in theaters on Nov. 27, 2024. Coincidentally, the movie will come out the same day as the anticipated film adaptation of Wicked, which some are already claiming will be the theater kid version of Barbenheimer.
