Everything we know about season 4 of 'Only Murders in the Building'
Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building" will return for a fourth season on August 27.
The upcoming season will partly take place in Los Angeles.
Meryl Streep will reprise her role as Loretta, and Molly Shannon will join the cast as a new character.
"Only Murders in the Building," Hulu's hit TV show about a misfit trio of true-crime podcast fans turned sleuths, is returning for a fourth season.
The series stars Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora, Martin Short as Oliver Putnam, and Steve Martin as Charles-Haden Savage, residents of an apartment building in NYC called The Arconia. Since premiering in 2021, each season of "OMITB" has focused on a different murder mystery.
The season three finale ended with Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), Charles' stunt double from his time on "Brazzos," getting shot in the chest in his apartment, presumably by an unidentified person who assumed Sazz was actually Charles.
This cliffhanger and surprising death will be the focal point of season four. Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming season of "OMITB."
Season 4 will partly take place in Los Angeles
The season three finale teased that the main characters would visit LA but not relocate there because they could only handle the city in "small doses." The first teaser for season four confirmed that the trio will travel to the West Coast after learning that a Hollywood studio wants to make a movie about their podcast.
In an interview with TVLine published after the finale in October, cocreator John Hoffman said that New York is an integral part of the "OMITB," but he doesn't want the show to become "too insular."
"There is our apartment building, and much like how we want to get out and be in New York as much as possible, I think you also have to remember this trio and the potential for whatever would be happening in their lives that might lead them to go away for some reason," he said.
"I've got big hopes in that way, to shake up the look, but it has to be driven by the story," Hoffman added.
Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich also spoke about the show heading to LA in a recent interview with Deadline.
"I'm very excited to see Steve, Martin, and Selena take a little break from the apartment building and come to Los Angeles," he said, adding that the change of scenery will enhance the upcoming season.
Meryl Streep will return as Loretta Durkin
In February, multiple outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, confirmed that Streep would reprise her role in season four.
Streep joined "OMITB" during season three as Loretta, a struggling actor who landed a role in Oliver's play "Death Rattle," which then became a musical called "Death Rattle Dazzle." Loretta and Oliver also developed a romantic relationship.
It was later revealed that she took interest in the play because she hoped to reconnect with her estranged son, Dickie Glenroy (Jeremy Shamos).
Loretta was last seen talking to Dickie about offers she received for acting roles, which Oliver encouraged her to pursue so she could follow her dreams and get a "fresh start" in LA with her son.
Molly Shannon, Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, and Kumail Nanjiani are among the new cast members
Deadline reported that Shannon will portray a "high-powered LA businesswoman who finds herself drawn into the world of the investigation in NY."
The "Saturday Night Live" alum confirmed her involvement on Instagram, writing: "I'm so excited. Can't wait to be in that FANCY building!!!"
Multiple publications, including Variety and Deadline, later reported that Longoria would play a recurring, undisclosed role in season four.
"Schitt's Creek" star Eugene Levy and Kumail Nanjiani will also reportedly have recurring roles. According to Variety, Nanjiani's character "will be integral to this season's investigation."
Additional guest stars for the season include Zach Galifianakis, Melissa McCarthy, and Richard Kind.
Season 4 premieres on Tuesday, August 27
Hulu announced the premiere date in a teaser trailer released at the Disney Upfront presentation on Tuesday. Following the premiere on August 27, new episodes will be released every Tuesday.
