Small, but perfectly formed: the Abarth 595 might be the most fun you can have, pound for pound

Leasing comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. In fact, we’ve written at length about the benefits of leasing, as well as the reasons why buying outright could be a better option for you. But for those buyers for whom leasing a car represents good value, we have teamed up with leading leasing firm Select Car Leasing to bring exclusive weekly deals to registered Telegraph readers.

By leasing a car using the links below, you’ll be eligible for a £100 discount on the standard arrangement fee on the cost of a lease. The Telegraph motoring team independently hand picks these cars every week – so check back in a few days if nothing takes your fancy – based on our experiences with the cars we drive.

Ford Mustang Convertible - from £595 per month*

Mustang convertible
Mustang convertible

Expensive petrol and bendy roads have prevented muscle cars from becoming as popular in Britain as they are in Australia or the United States, but the latest Mustang is (just about) efficient and dynamic enough to recommend to UK buyers. You can have it with a four- or an eight-cylinder engine, and while the V8 is the one we’d ordinarily go for, many customers find the smaller 2.3-litre not only more efficient, but better to drive too. The Convertible is by far our favourite American car for summer, and the more powerful version even has a special burnout mode. Yes way.

Volkswagen T-Roc - from £185 per month*

Volkswagen’s T-Roc is one of the most boringly competent cars in the world. Germany has long been Europe’s provider of workaday family SUVs, and this one is as well-engineered, blandly designed and reasonably priced as any other. While we struggle to become excited by it, and aren’t convinced by the amount of rear legroom on offer, there’s no denying that the T-Roc makes a compelling family vehicle, and is well worth a test drive if you’re in the market for a small crossover SUV.

Abarth 124 Spider - from £285 per month*

Abarth 124 Spider
Abarth 124 Spider

The Abarth 124 Spider is a tuned-up Fiat 124 Spider, which in turn is a modified version of the legendary Mazda MX-5 (known as the Miata in the States). Taking a perfectly good Japanese roadster and tinkering with it in Italy might not sound like the best idea, but the result is actually pretty spectacular, and will go a long way to scratching the "itch" felt by anyone who reminisces about the heyday of British roadsters.

BMW i3 - from £340 per month*

bmw i3
bmw i3

BMW’s i3 is one of our favourite electric cars. Available as a pure battery-electric version, as well as in “range extender” hybrid guise, the i3 remains essentially a class leader five years after it was introduced. It’s won countless awards, too, and while we recommend it almost every week to buyers in search of a BEV or PHEV for light family duties, we’re convinced that it bears the hallmarks of a “future classic”, too.

Suzuki Ignis - from £130 per month*

Suzuki Ignis
Suzuki Ignis

The little Suzuki Ignis is available with both a hybrid powertrain and a basic four-wheel-drive system, making it one of the most versatile and mechanically curious cars on the market. At just 3.7 metres long it's a very small hatchback, and it's uncommon for cars in this segment to offer all-wheel-drive practicality, so for motorists living in the countryside or who regularly park in muddy fields, the size, efficiency and price of an Ignis could be attractive. Cheaper two-wheel-drive versions are still very easy to recommend, however.

Mercedes A-Class - from £199 per month*

Handsome, sophisticated and technologically advanced, the A-Class offers Mercedes quality in hatchback form. It's a little more expensive than its Japanese and South Korean counterparts, but discerning buyers will see the difference in interior trim and appointment. We'd always recommend test driving cheaper cars, of course, but the relatively affordable leasing cost of the A-Class represents a tempting way for motorists to drive a Mercedes.

Range Rover Velar - from £418 per month*

Velar
Velar

The Velar is a relatively recent interpretation of the Range Rover recipe – luxurious cabin, stylish exterior, and a punchy all-wheel-drive powertrain which is more than capable of serious off-road travel. It's an expensive vehicle, and in terms of pure 4x4 ability there are cheaper models that could probably perform better. But when it comes to luxury, versatility and road presence, the Velar is an obvious contender.

Peugeot 508 - from £260 per month*

It's handsome and, in 'SW' estate form, extremely practical. France has always had a reputation for comfortable cars and the 508 is a return to form in that regard. It arguably competes with German models such as the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4, though in reality offers something a little bit special in comparison. If only the French had a word for je ne sais quoi.

Abarth 595 - from £169 per month*

Abarth 595
Abarth 595

This punchy little hot hatch has an extremely attractive fun-to-weight ratio. With the approximate size and shape of a vanilla Fiat 500, but with the acceleration (and exhaust note) of a far more serious performance car, the Abarth 595 is one of our favourite small cars. And for people who want to drive something interesting, it's one of the best value models on the road.

Skoda Superb estate – from £231 per month*

Skoda Superb Estate
Skoda Superb Estate

If there was only one car model in the world, we'd want it to be this one. Skoda's superb Superb is one of the most versatile, comfortable and keenly-priced cars on the market, and the estate derivative only makes it better. We've always argued in favour of the Superb estate over an equivalent SUV, and with a solid 4x4 system available on some models, there are very few buyers for whom Skoda's flagship would be insufficient. This is a car that lives up to its name.

Telegraph rating: five stars out of five

Dacia Logan estate – £117 per month*
Dacia Logan
Dacia Logan

Pound for pound, the Dacia Logan estate is as good as it gets. Basic, affordable and huge, this ultra-budget estate car is one of the most affordable vehicles currently on the market. Yes, it's slow, and no the boffins at Euro NCAP weren't too impressed with this Romanian wagon when they crash tested it, but if you want to return to simple motoring for a bargain price then consider this oft-overlooked entry-level model.

Telegraph rating: three stars out of five

Volvo V90 estate – £300 per month*

There's a reason why a Volvo estate is the established middle class chariot of choice. They're family-focused, comfy and sophisticated, offering enough room for two adults, three children and all the associated baggage that comes with that format. The V90 is our pick of the bunch, but estate enthusiasts would do well to test drive the smaller V60 as well.

Telegraph rating: four stars out of five

Fiat Tipo estate - £172 per month*
Fiat Tipo estate
Fiat Tipo estate

This is one of the unsung heroes of the small estate world. We absolutely love the way it looks and its comfy, relatively roomy interior. It's nowhere near as spacious as (for example) the V90 but for drivers in search of a slightly enhanced hatchback, this Italian stallion pony is almost as good as it gets.

Telegraph rating: four stars out of five

Audi A6 Allroad estate - £448 per month*
A6 Allroad
A6 Allroad

The A6 Avant is, arguably, king of the estates, but in Allroad form it gets even better. A four-wheel-drive systems offers improved stability on slippery tarmac, and enough off-road performance to drag you and yours out of a muddy car park without too much embarrassment.

Toyota C-HR – £203.99 per month*
C-HR
C-HR

For those a bit less brand-conscious, the excellent hybrid C-HR would be a smashing alternative. Its looks are divisive, but there are those of us on the Telegraph motoring desk who suspect the C-HR could become a classic in twenty or more years' time. It's probably Japan's best hybrid SUV, and while the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV offers a plug-in hybrid system and more space, the C-HR is a strong all-rounder for those of us without off-street parking.

Alfa Romeo Giulia – £333 per month*

The Giulia is one of our favourite cars from the past few years, and easily the best thing Alfa Romeo has produced for the past twenty. Available with a range of engines, from the merely 'good' 2.2 diesel to the truly brilliant Ferrari-derived 2.9-litre V6 in the Quadrifoglio trim level (priced at £666.49 per month). There is no better rear-wheel-drive performance saloon.
