Gangs of London spoilers ahead.

Gangs of London's Emmett J Scanlan has opened up about how he really felt about his character's grisly demise in the crime drama's opening episode.

Created by Matt Flannery and The Raid director Gareth Evans, the show centres on Sean Wallace (Peaky Blinders' Joe Cole), a young man who's forced to take over his father Finn's criminal dealings after he was assassinated.

In the pilot, Scanlan plays Finn's loyal driver Jack O'Doherty, who gets brutally murdered by Lucian Msamati's Ed Dumani, who in turn, frames his death as a suicide.

Despite his involvement with the show being brief, he says he was "very excited" to be involved in the project and that "it was an honour" to work with the cast and crew for the short period of time he did.

"Story wise, what happens to myself and Colm Meaney – (who plays Finn Wallace) – at the start is what gets the ball rolling and throws the characters surrounding us into chaos. I loved being part of that show. It was an honour to work with those guys.

"It's always about the work and if I'm lucky, being part of something great. As the famous saying goes, 'There are no such thing as small parts, only small actors.'"

Scanlan went on to add that he was in the middle of shooting DC superhero series Krypton and Peaky Blinders when he was offered the role of O'Doherty, so in reality, having a quick cameo suited his schedule best.

"It was the perfect fit for that very reason," he explained. "But again that's not the point."

Gangs of London airs on Sky Atlantic. All nine episodes are available to stream now on NOW TV.
