Hollyoaks spoilers follow.

Hollyoaks star Joe McGann has hinted that scheming Edward Hutchinson will secure his daughter's silence over his shocking secret.

Last week, Edward confessed to Verity that he'd tricked Tony into thinking he had a brain tumour – even bringing him into an operating theatre at the hospital to make it seem as realistic as possible.

Edward warned Verity to keep quiet about the truth, but Monday's E4 first look episode (May 18) will see him wrong-footed as she threatens to reveal everything.

Asked whether Verity could spark Edward's downfall in the long-run, Joe exclusively told Digital Spy: "It's a potential! It could be Verity, it could be Tony, or it could be the situations that Edward puts himself in.

"But Edward's confidence is so high. He believes in his own abilities. Some of his scheming is not planned. Some of it he comes up with very quickly and then he lives with the consequences.

"Between Edward and Verity, there's a very touching scene we did, where we go back over the crash that killed her mother. He reminds her of how much he loved her mother and that he saved Verity's life.

"That's very much marking somebody's card – saying: 'You shouldn't tell the truth about me, because you owe me'. He reckons he's got Verity in control and reckons everyone else is less smart than him."

Edward's recent manipulation of Tony will ultimately pay off when he's invited to move back into the Hutchinsons' flat. This allows him to focus on his ultimate aim of winning back Tony's wife Diane.

Joe continued: "As far as a masterplan is concerned, Edward has got a target. He still wants to be with Diane and he wants the family angle too. He's still not totally sure how he's going to go about it, but lying about the brain tumour gave him an opportunity.

"Edward saw an opportunity that would help him further along the line. Part of him is making it up as he goes along. That's part of why Edward is so dangerous – he's very quick-thinking.

"Edward has been sailing very close to the wind with this, but he's very confident that he'll get out of it. It'd be disastrous for Edward to get found out, but he thinks he'll get away with it.

"With the operation, it was about power. In that sphere and that theatre, he was all-powerful and in control.

"I don't think he's trying to kill Tony at the moment – I don't think that's the idea. Something would have to downturn in Edward's life before he became a killer, but he's got all the tools at his disposal, being at the hospital."

Hollyoaks airs new episodes on Mondays and Tuesdays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look episodes at 7pm on E4. Classic episodes, titled Hollyoaks Favourites, air on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 7pm on E4.
