Exclusive: All the Light We Cannot See boss on lesson Peaky Blinders boss taught him

All the Light We Cannot See director Shawn Levy has shared the lesson Peaky Blinders boss Steven Knight taught him for the WWII drama series.

Based on Anthony Doerr's best-selling novel of the same name and starring Mark Ruffalo and Aria Mia Loberti, All the Light We Cannot See tells the decade-long story of blind French girl Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Loberti) in Nazi-occupied Paris.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Levy said that listening to Knight, who served as writer on the four-part limited series, was like being in film school.

Talking about his favourite moments from the series, Knight recalled scenes where Mark Ruffalo's character teaches his blind daughter how to walk through Paris using a wooden model.

"Emotionally, I love the moments with the model, where it's father, daughter, and the model," said Knight. "What I tried to do is reflect the simplicity and straightforwardness of how that relationship is with all of the big emotion kept back behind that, because you can't just go around being emotional about the situation all the time.

"It's from the book," he added. "That's where it originates from. Sometimes, there is an object, and there are two people, and a story is told almost without a word. That's why I think those scenes are so powerful."

Touching on Knight's remarks, Levy opened up about the lessons he had learned from the writer, saying: "I love listening to Steve talk. I feel like I'm in film school every minute that I'm doing an interview, because Steven likes to underwrite feeling. That's a huge asset for me, because I tend to like emotional storytelling.

Levy added: "And so what Steve did is exactly what he's saying: it's just Mark Ruffalo teaching this young girl how to walk from his office to their home. He's just mapping the neighbourhood with her fingers."
