Get an Exclusive Look at Tate McRae's 'Are We Flying Tour' Style: 'A Feistier Side of Me'
Tate McRae, who just wrapped her 20-city “Are We Flying Tour” on Oct. 15, gives PEOPLE an inside look at her concert style.
Ever since her single “You Broke Me First” topped the charts in 2021, Tate McRae has been taking her meteoric rise in stride. A full-length album and major beauty contract would soon follow for the singer/songwriter, 20, who is showing no signs of slowing down, having just dropped a single, “Greedy,” and wrapped her 20-city “Are We Flying Tour.”
For the North America tour, which kicked off in Chicago on Sept. 5 and wrapped up on Oct. 15 in Dallas, McRae wanted to nail a comfortable but elevated look, she tells PEOPLE exclusively.
“Stage looks have always been tricky because I need to make sure I can move and dance on stage at the same time as pop under the lights. For this tour, I also really wanted to find outfits that encompass all sides of me. I can be a bit of a tomboy, but I also love feminine pieces. I really love vintage, but at the same time, I have been excited about bringing more designer pieces into my fold,” she explains.
Figuring out her unique style has been an “ongoing, continuous process” but also “really fun,” McRae says. “I’m really happy with where I’ve landed.”
McRae, who shared an up-close look at some of her favorite outfits from the tour, adds, “Hopefully, you guys feel like you are seeing a feistier side of me overall – from the outfit I pick each night, to the creative in the video wall behind me, to my on-stage performance – everything being cohesive is very important to me.”
Tate McRae's Tour Style MVPs
While McRae's look changed from one stop to the other, there were some repeats, such as the vintage hockey glove she wore each night “as a nod to the creative behind my latest single “Greedy,” and another non-negotiable, my Ganni knee-high boots – I wear them almost every night.”
Sept. 6 in Minneapolis
“This was my second night of tour. I loved the look I wore — a black latex Miaou Frankie tee, Adidas pants and a Balenciaga belt — I felt very Y2K pop. One fun fact about this look is that we sewed the belt to the pants right before I went on stage so that I could better secure my mic pack.”
Sept. 8 in Detroit
“This outfit was for my show in Detroit. I kept it very sporty and loose. I wore a Holiday see-through jersey, Hanes men’s boxers, and my usual Ganni boots.”
Sept. 10 in Montreal
“For so long, I had been teasing my fans, telling them that I wanted to make jersey merch. It was such a thrill to finally be able to make a T8 hockey jersey! I’ve been wearing the jersey on stage a fair bit – it’s really fun for me to match with people in the audience wearing it, as well.
This jersey comes in black and white and is perfectly oversize. I pair it with booty shorts and my Ganni boots. It’s super effortless and so cute. I am so happy with how it turned out and am so appreciative of everyone who has worn it in support.”
Sept. 11 in Toronto
“For my stop in Toronto, I wanted to embrace my Canadian roots! I was excited to wear a vintage Old Timer Association shirt from Mothfood [a vintage shop]. I grew up in Calgary and my brother is a hockey player…plus, I’ve been really leaning into hockey imagery (as seen in my music video for “Greedy.”) So, it only felt right to show some love for Canada and hockey at this stop.”
Sept. 14 in Philadelphia
“I was so excited for Philly because I was performing “Greedy” for the first time – about an hour before it was released. I wanted this look to be as playful as the song makes me feel. I layered two bras together and paired them with my “T” necklace.”
Sept. 20 in New York City
“New York City was so exciting! I played Pier 17, which was the only outside venue this tour. I quite literally was looking out into the N.Y.C skyline – it was so beautiful and inspiring. For this show, I went with a Vivienne Westwood tank top, basketball shorts, and my Ganni boots. We took this picture just a couple minutes before going on stage.”
Sept. 25 in Atlanta
“I do my own glam on tour! I think all the years of doing my own makeup for dance competitions prepared me well. I usually aim for a natural and dewy skin look. I like to accentuate my eyes with eyeliner and mascara. Patrick Ta is everything. As for my hair, I nearly always keep it down for shows. By the time I run off the stage, it’s always messy from how much I flip it, haha.”
Oct. 2 in Denver
“This outfit perfectly exemplifies my desire to blend my masculine and feminine fashion tastes. I wore a fun metallic latex top from Miaou, black basketball shorts, Bonnie Clyde Angel sunglasses and of course my hockey glove, that I wear for the first song each show.”
Oct. 4 in Los Angeles
“I had so much fun with this outfit. I wore a Gallery Dept. mesh jersey that my mom found and hung it over my shoulder for a more feminine, edgy, stage look. I paired the jersey with silver Adidas shorts from their collab with Wales Bonner. My friends and family were in the audience this night – I had a ton of fun and felt super free to move around on stage.”
