An insurance specialist is urging people to safeguard their homes against damage inflicted by nesting squirrels, a risk not usually included in standard home insurance policies. Vince Kelly, from insurance broker Lycetts, has issued the warning in anticipation of the second squirrel nesting season of the year in July.

With claims for animal infestations at a record high, Mr Kelly stressed the need for preventative measures, noting that most home insurance policies do not cover damage caused by small pests and rodents, as these are considered preventable issues.

"Squirrels are notorious for causing costly damage to electrical wiring, pipes, cables and insulation in attics and converted roof spaces where they make a home for their young," Mr Kelly stated.

"They can even displace roof tiles, enter through chimneys or damage guttering and fascia boards." Mr Kelly highlighted that it's illegal to relocate grey squirrels.

"Preventative measures are the best approach," he suggested. "Homeowners should promptly repair any roof damage and trim branches that could offer easy access to their roofs." He also advised using robust wire mesh to seal off clear entry points once it's confirmed there are no squirrels inside.

"The optimal times to do this are mid-morning and mid-afternoon when grey squirrels are typically out foraging," Mr Kelly recommended. Furthermore, Mr Kelly highlighted the risk to gardens with decking from squirrel damage."

"It's crucial to make your garden less attractive to squirrels by removing trees or branches with uninhabited nests, covering bulbs with wire mesh, and using squirrel-resistant bird feeders instead of loose food," he advised.

"I also urge homeowners to purchase approved squirrel repellents to prevent costly damage to their homes and gardens."

While it is not illegal to catch and kill grey squirrels using live-catch cage traps or approved spring traps, Mr Kelly suggested that this should be considered a last resort if other methods fail.

"If you proceed with the lethal control of squirrels, I recommend using a reputable pest control contractor who will carry out these measures effectively, legally and humanely," he concluded.
