A car expert has shared the eight models that drivers should be buying if they want their car to retain their value. While a brand new car plummets in value as soon as you drive it onto the road, some used cars hold their value better than others.

Aidan Rushby, the founder and CEO of car finance app Carmoola, shared his top eight recommended cars that drivers should stick to if they want to make more of their money back when it comes time to sell. He told the Express: "Cars that tend to hold their value well usually combine quality build, brand strength, and a strong demand in the used car market.

"Economic factors and changing preferences, such as the increasing interest in hybrid and electric vehicles, also play a significant role in influencing car resale values."

Rushby said that one of the best used cars that retains its value is the Mini Cooper. He described it as a 'British icon' and said the reason it maintains its value is due to its 'enduring appeal'.

Next, the car finance pro recommended the Land Rover Defender, which is 'known for its rugged durability and luxury' and remains 'highly sought after' in the UK market. The Porsche Macan was another top contender as Rushby said it's a 'desirable option in the resale market' due to it being a compact SUV that 'combines luxury with performance'.

He added that the Volkswagen Golf, particularly the GTI and electric-powered model, is a 'favourite sporty hatchback' that many are looking to buy second hand, while the Toyota Corolla has a 'strong following' and is renowned for its reliability and efficiency.

Unsurprisingly, the Ford Fiesta made Rushby's top eight list and is known as one of the UK's best-selling cars. It has a low depreciation value thanks to its popularity and affordability and Rushby added: ""Plus, as it has now been discontinued the only option for a Fiesta fan is to buy a used car."

The Audi Q5 also has a good resale value as it blends 'brand clout and practicality', and finally, premium small car, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class 'holds its value due to the prestigious brand and high-tech features'.
