Health experts have revealed that there's one vegetable we should be incorporating into our skincare routine as well as our diet - and that is broccoli.

It's common knowledge that eating your five-a-day is key to looking and feeling your best, with organic leafy greens often hailed as the secret to a healthy glow.

However, research suggests that integrating these vegetables into your skincare regime could also enhance your skin's appearance further. Broccoli and avocado are not only packed with pollution-fighting antioxidants but are also rich in vitamins C and A, which can help combat oxidative stress, wrinkles, and dryness.

Studies have demonstrated that vegetables like broccoli, cucumber, kale, tomato, and carrot can improve skin appearance and provide protection against UV radiation. A study last year discovered that bioactive substances such as sulforaphane, found in these vegetables, have antioxidant properties that counteract the effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

ROS is a significant factor in premature skin ageing. Research indicates that sulforaphane can reduce the number of skin cells killed by UV light by up to 29%, with this protection lasting for up to 48 hours.

Furthermore, sulforaphane may help maintain collagen levels in your skin. It could even have anti-cancer effects, including against certain types of skin cancer, reports Bristol Live.

Skin expert, CEO and founder of Tropic Skincare Susie Ma said: "We absorb many of the essential vitamins our bodies need from our diets. But by using products that contain concentrated forms of these nutrients, it can help target your skin concerns.

"Similar to drinking an organic smoothie, I recommend using skincare that also has these greens in the top line of their ingredients list to ensure you see their maximum youth-enhancing benefits."

Kavitha Murugesan, Head of Product Innovation at Tropic Skincare, has listed four top 'superfood' ingredients you should be looking out for when it comes to buying beauty products.

  1. Broccoli: Broccoli oil forms a protective layer on top of your skin that can reduce transepidermal moisture loss by up to 34%, leaving it soft and silky.

  2. Kale: Kale oil is packed with vitamins A and C which prevent oxidative stress, wrinkles, and dryness. Helping you look more youthful.

  3. Avocado: Avocado milk nourishes skin, maintains your skin's pH level, and when cleverly formulated with other juicy botanicals can help to improve skin hydration by an average of 91% helping to maintain a bouncy appearance.

  4. Cucumber: Cucumbers aren’t just for popping over your eyes in the spa, their juices can be used to reduce puffiness and improve the appearance of tired-looking skin. Face masks that include this fresh ingredient can improve skin hydration by an average of 175% in just two hours.
