As the weather warms up, many of us have noticed an increase in pesky flies buzzing around our homes. With windows being left open more frequently and flies attracted to ripe fruit, rubbish, vegetables or moisture, it's no surprise that their numbers seem to multiply during this time of year.

Different types of flies will be drawn to your home for different reasons. Common house flies are particularly fond of decaying food such as rotting meat, while fruit flies are attracted to sugary substances and tend to feed on overripe fruit, spilt fizzy drinks and alcohol, reports Leicestershire Live.

Drain flies prefer moist environments and organic materials, and are often found near drains like kitchen sinks, where they also lay their eggs. But flies aren't just a nuisance - they can also spread harmful bacteria such as salmonella, typhoid and E-Coli. However, there is a solution.

Experts suggest that there are certain smells that flies find repulsive, which you can use to deter them. Walter Murphy, a pest control expert at PriceYourJob.co.uk, recommends trying essential oils, such as lemongrass or peppermint. Many essential oils have insect repellent properties. They are toxic to flies and insects, and can also help eliminate ants.

Mr Murphy said: "Anything that contains essential oils such as lemongrass or peppermint will keep flies at bay. These natural fragrances give off a strong smell that instantly deters flies from entering your home. There are plenty of household sprays and perfumes that contain essential oils. You can use them in every room in the house."

Cinnamon is also touted as a natural method for keeping flies away. Its strong aroma is said to be unlikable, even toxic, to these pesky insects. Mr Murphy said: "Flies hate the smell of cinnamon. You may consider purchasing a cinnamon- infused air freshener to reduce the number of flies in your home. Burning cinnamon candles is also another great way to get rid of flies, as the smell will spread easily around the property."

Somewhat surprisingly, more costly methods involve using vodka as a deterrent for house flies. Mr Murphy said: "Flies cannot bear the smell of vodka, so you may want to use a spray that contains vodka to ensure that no flies enter your home. You can also place vodka bags around your home, especially in areas like the kitchen, in order to prevent any food contamination."

Those who may not enjoy the scent of vodka can enhance it using basil or lavender essential oil for a more agreeable aroma. Mr Murphy's final suggestion was utilising apple cider vinegar, a pantry staple known for its multifaceted uses, to eliminate flies in the home.

The pest control specialist said: "All you need to do is half fill a jar with some apple cider vinegar, soap and a paper funnel. The smell of the fermented apple will attract and trap flies, as they will drink the solution and remain trapped in the jar." Once the flies are contained in the jar, they can be released outside.
