Returning from a holiday might bring more than just memories if you're not careful with your luggage, as mattress experts have issued a stark warning to holidaymakers.

MattressNextDay's team has highlighted the risk of unwittingly bringing bed bugs into your home by unpacking in the bedroom. The company's CEO and sleep expert, Martin Seeley, has given crucial advice for those returning from their travels.

He said: "Unpack on a hard floor and not in your bedroom. When you get home, unpack your luggage in another location apart from your bedroom. Even better if it's on hard flooring, as you won't be able to spot bed bugs on a carpet."

He also recommended a thorough inspection of suitcases, he said: "Inspect your suitcase closely and use a flashlight or torch to look into the seams, folds and pockets of your suitcase." Martin emphasised the importance of vacuum cleaning suitcases before storing them away to prevent any hidden bed bugs from infesting your home, reports the Mirror.

These critters can easily hitch a ride in your luggage and find new homes in beds, curtains, or other soft furnishings. Martin pointed out a common blunder travellers make upon reaching their holiday destination.

He said: "Never put your suitcase on the hotel bed. It is common that when you initially arrive at your hotel, you might put your suitcase straight onto the bed without checking for bugs and begin unpacking."

By doing so, you may inadvertently invite bed bugs to cling onto your belongings and accompany you back home, he cautioned. Holidaymakers are advised to keep their suitcases near the hotel room door or on the luggage rack to avoid bed bugs.

These pests are usually more attracted to dirty clothes, so it's a good idea to bring an extra bag for your laundry. Many hotels offer laundry services, allowing guests to have their clothes cleaned during their stay.
