F1 Miami Grand Prix LIVE: Lando Norris claims famous first F1 victory
McLaren's Lando Norris capitalised on a bit of good fortune to win the Miami Grand Prix on Sunday, holding off Red Bull's triple world champion Max Verstappen for his first Formula One victory.
It was a long overdue triumph for the Briton who held the record for most podiums without a win (15), having finished runner-up an agonising eight times in 110 grand prix. Verstappen had seemed well placed to claim a fifth win in six races until a midway crash allowed McLaren to cash in on a safety car period, with Norris pitting and coming out with the lead.
Seeking a Miami hat-trick of wins, the Dutchman filled Norris's mirrors on the restart but his Red Bull could offer no challenge as the McLaren pulled clear. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc completed the podium, coming home third ahead of team mate Carlos Sainz, who was later penalised five seconds for his involvement in a collision with McLaren's Oscar Piastri dropping the Spaniard to fifth. The penalty moved Verstappen's Red Bull team mate Sergio Perez up one spot to fourth.
"About time! What a race. It's been a long time coming. Finally I've managed to do it," Norris told Sky Sports. "I'm so happy for my whole team. I finally delivered for them. Long day, tough race. Finally on top, so I'm over the moon. I'm just proud. A lot of people doubted me along the way. I've made a lot of mistakes over my last five years in my short career but today we put it all together."

The Lando Norris gamble that inspired brilliant first F1 win with McLaren

Has there ever been a more popular winner in modern-day Formula 1? Perhaps not. After the chequered flag, everybody under the sun wanted to congratulate Lando Norris: his jubilant McLaren team, his fellow drivers, even Donald Trump, present at the Hard Rock Stadium, seemed outshone by the boy from Bristol and his unshakable smile at the end of the Miami Grand Prix.
The phrase on everyone’s lips was that it had been a “long time coming” for the 24-year-old. That’s true. 110 races, 15 podiums and one excruciating mishap in Russia three years ago speak to that. But Norris has finally entered the winners’ circle, on Sunday becoming the 21st Brit to win a Formula 1 race. For the first time in 18 months, God Save the King was belted out at the F1 podium ceremony.
As often is the case in the slender margins of elite sport, fortune played its role in the Florida heat. Norris started fifth on the grid, a day after crashing out on lap one of the sprint race, with optimism perhaps surprisingly high. He’d stated in the team briefing on Sunday morning that it was a day “full of opportunities.” Yet with Max Verstappen on pole position once again, overhauling the Red Bulls and Ferraris out in front seemed a daunting task.

“I wish I was [there]. The wine is flowing in the west country. A long time coming. I was figuring out it’s 900 races I’ve been to over 16 years, but we’ve got there!
“it’s beautiful. Lewis’ Dad gave me a text, you know as a parent how many hours you put in. 350 weekends away, a lot of time but I love it, so happy for him!
“There’s a lot of bad days as well as good days. He’s got one more thing, world champion next! Thousands of texts and congratulations!
“It’s just emotional, it’s been a long journey. It takes a long time. Pleasantness of getting there, one point so far off. You get to F1, do you win a race? Feels good, amazing.”
"I've just had Lewis' dad give me text and we've been through a lot" 🥺❤

Verstappen Sr is not one to shirk his words. Let’s be clear: whatever the reasons, he wanted Horner out. And though the dominance of his son on the track may seem never-ending, there may now be a conclusion of sorts in sight for this Red Bull juggernaut.

Fernando Alonso unhappy with Lewis Hamilton: ‘He ruined the race’
Lewis Hamilton escaped a penalty in Saturday’s sprint race in Miami “because he is not Spanish”, Fernando Alonso has claimed.
Alonso accused Hamilton of “arriving like a bull” and subsequently said he “ruined” other drivers’ races after they collided at the opening corner at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Alonso suffered a puncture following the coming together. His Aston Martin team-mate Lance Stroll and British driver Lando Norris retired with damage after they, too, were caught up in the four-car tangle.
The stewards noted the incident, but took no action. Hamilton finished eighth but was later demoted to 16th when he was hit with a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit-lane.

Verstappen Sr is not one to shirk his words. Let’s be clear: whatever the reasons, he wanted Horner out. And though the dominance of his son on the track may seem never-ending, there may now be a conclusion of sorts in sight for this Red Bull juggernaut.

Christian Horner reacts to prospect of Adrian Newey joining Ferrari
Sunday 5 May 2024 17:36 , Kieran Jackson
Christian Horner believes Adrian Newey will “take some time” to decide his future – but refused to rule out the prospect that Red Bull’s design guru could join Ferrari next year.
Red Bull confirmed the departure of their chief technical officer Newey, the man praised with this current era of car which is dominating Formula 1 currently, earlier this week after 18 years.
Newey had a contract until the end of 2025 – signed last May – but is said to be unhappy with the current power struggle within the team, focused on team principal Horner and long-term adviser Helmut Marko, in the wake of the scandal engulfing F1 boss Horner and his conduct towards a female colleague.
Now, Newey is set to leave early next year, with Ferrari the most likely destination for his services where he would potentially form a partnership with Lewis Hamilton in Italy in 2025. Aston Martin have also made a big-money offer.

F1 Miami Grand Prix: Raceday!
Sunday 5 May 2024 17:34 , Kieran Jackson
Formula 1 returns to the United States this weekend as the street circuit around the Hard Rock Stadium hosts the Miami Grand Prix for the third time - and the second of six sprint weekends in 2024.
Max Verstappen was in dominant form last time out in China, winning both the sprint race and grand prix in Shanghai, and leads the world championship despite the current unrest at Red Bull which has led to Adrian Newey’s shock departure from the team this week, with Ferrari favourites to sign the star designer.
Sergio Perez is 25 points behind his team-mate in the standings, with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz next-best on the list. Lando Norris finished second in Shanghai as he continues to target a first win in F1, while Lewis Hamilton will be striving for more following his worst ever start to a season.
Miami was selected as one of six venues to host a sprint weekend by F1 this year. Verstappen has won the first two editions of the race, which first appeared on the calendar in 2022, and put his Red Bull on pole on Saturday after also winning the sprint race in Florida.

“It’s about keeping the DRS after turn one, we must not lose it. It’s about the start.”

“We definitely improved the car a bit. Every single year we come here I find it difficult to be consistent. It’s super hard to make sure sector one and sector three feels good. It’s incredibly tough and about finding that balance. Not the enjoyable lap of my career.

Fernando Alonso unhappy with Lewis Hamilton: ‘He ruined the race’
Saturday 4 May 2024 20:51 , Kieran Jackson

Max Verstappen’s reaction to Adrian Newey’s departure:
Saturday 4 May 2024 15:52 , Kieran Jackson
“I would have preferred, of course, for Adrian to stay.
“But at the end of the day, and that’s what I also said to Adrian, you have to do what you think is best for yourself, because at the end of the day, F1 is a bit of a shark tank.
“And I think it’s very important that you do think about yourself, that you make the right decisions for yourself and your family.
“So I also don’t blame him. If someone wants to leave, you go and pursue other goals or things in life, so that’s absolutely fine.”
