F1 United States Grand Prix LIVE! Race result as Max Verstappen hits 50 with landmark win

Red Bull's triple world champion Max Verstappen held off a charging Lewis Hamilton to take the 50th win of his Formula One career at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday.

Mercedes driver Hamilton finished second with McLaren's Lando Norris third at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

The victory was Verstappen's third in a row in Austin and 15th in 18 races so far this year, equalling with four to spare the record the Dutch 26-year-old set last year for most wins in a single season. Only four drivers before him had amassed 50 Grand Prix wins as the Red Bull driver continues to dominate. It was a much better day for Hamilton, however, and perhaps an earlier tire change would have allowed him to overtake the world champion late on and claim his first Grand Prix win since Jeddah in 2021.

Dominant Red Bull and Verstappen have already secured both the constructors' and drivers' titles once again.

F1 United States Grand Prix 2023: Johnny Herbert: I only see Red Bull winning

19:38 , Jonathan Gorrie

Red Bull have still got that little edge over everyone. We saw the McLaren performance which was good to see from the sprint race and the race itself. Red Bull had to think about their strategy to ensure there was a big enough gap.

The characteristics of the track, which is quite bumpy, could aidMcLaren who to my mind have the best handling car out there. It is not ahorrible car to drive. The Red Bull still has little elements where it tries tobite you every now and again, but Max is able to deal with theta generally.

The McLaren just looks very easy to drive. Maybe with the bumps they will be in a slightly stronger position. But overall it is still Red Bull and Max.

An innocuous industrial estate in Milton Keynes is the unlikely backdrop for one of Britain’s sporting success stories.

On this particular Monday, a DJ is outside in the sunshine playing music at full blast and, elsewhere, there are echoes of the workforce clinking bottles of Heineken.

Some wear branded T-shirts with the No6 on them, others with a three, both nods to a level of dominance unrivalled by perhaps any current sports team.

F1 United States Grand Prix: Max Verstappen raising the bar on Sebastian Vettel's dominance, says Red Bull boss Christian Horner

17:45 , Jonathan Gorrie

Max Verstappen has raised the bar on Sebastian Vettel, according to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner.

Verstappen is edging towards four-time world champion Vettel in the record books, having wrapped up a third title at the last grand prix in Qatar two weekends ago.The Dutchman bids for his 50th win in F1 this weekend at the United States Grand Prix, which will leave him just three shy of Red Bull’s former star driver.

With Verstappen capable of eclipsing that before the season’s end, Horner told Standard Sport: “We’ve worked with some greats. Seb was an outstanding talent with the four world titles in a row he managed to achieve. It’s a similar level of dominance with what Max is doing.

F1 United States Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen renew old rivalries as F1 world champion wins sprint

17:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

Max Verstappen saw off Lewis Hamilton's early challenge to claim victory in Saturday's F1 sprint race at the United States Grand Prix.

For the first time since their 2021 championship duel for the ages, Verstappen and Hamilton ran line astern in the 19-lap dash at Austin's Circuit of the Americas.

But Hamilton was unable to prevent Verstappen from taking the spoils, and accumulating yet another win of this most one-sided of Formula One campaigns. Hamilton took the chequered flag a distant 9.4 seconds adrift of Verstappen with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc third.

Verstappen, crowned champion of the world for a third time in Qatar a fortnight ago, took pole position earlier on Saturday and then put his elbows out at the start to ensure Leclerc did not sneak up his inside on the uphill drag to the opening bend.
