The US premiere of Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” will close out the 2022 AFI Fest, the American Film Institute announced Tuesday.
“The Fabelmans,” which has been touted as Spielberg’s most personal film to date, stars Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Gabriel LaBelle and Judd Hirsch in a story inspired by Spielberg’s own childhood. The film follows the formative years of a young man as he discovers a shattering family secret, causing him to use movies as a means to help him see the truth about others and himself.

The ensemble cast for “The Fabelmans” includes Jeannie Berlin, Julia Butters, Robin Bartlett and Keeley Karsten, with music by John Williams. Janusz Kaminski serves as cinematographer, and the film is edited by Michael Kahn and Sarah Broshar. Production design is helmed by Rick Carter, and the costume design is overseen by Mark Bridges.
“AFI Fest is where magic happens,” Bob Gazzale, AFI president and CEO, said. “And there is no greater cinematic magician than Steven Spielberg. We are honored to celebrate his return to the festival with this intimately powerful film that will send the audience’s spirits soaring.”
Now in its 36th year, AFI Fest 2022 will take place in person in Los Angeles from November 2-6.
The film from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment is co-written by Spielberg and Tony Kushner, who has previously collaborated with the director on “Lincoln,” “Munich” and “West Side Story.” Kristie Macosko Krieger, Spielberg and Kushner are producers on the film.
“The Fabelmans” arrives in theaters on November 11, 2022.
ICG Publicists Set Awards Timeline
The International Cinematographers Guild (ICG, IATSE Local 600) has set their awards timeline. It will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the ICG Publicists Awards Luncheon on March 10, 2023, at The Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“We look forward to continuing the time-honored tradition of showcasing Local 600 publicists and their contribution to the entertainment industry,” Menke and Main said.
The ICG Publicists Awards will be presented in the following categories: Motion Picture Showperson of the Year, Television Showperson of the Year, Maxwell Weinberg Award for Outstanding Publicity Campaign for Television and Motion Pictures, Les Mason Award for Career Achievement in Publicity, Bob Yeager Award for Community Service, Publicist of Year, Lifetime Achievement Award, Press Award, International Media Award and Excellence in Unit Still Photography for both Motion Pictures and for Television.

DNEG appoints Joel Hynek as visual effects supervisor on to-be-announced title
DNEG, a visual effects and animation studio specializing in feature films, television and multiplatform content, has hired Joel Hynek as visual effects supervisor on a to-be-announced title. Hynek, whose career spans four decades and includes two Oscar wins, will be based out of DNEG’s Los Angeles studio.
Hynek was first recognized by the Academy with a Scientific and Engineering Design Award for the design of the camera that made the effects for the original “Predator” possible. He earned his second Oscar for his contribution on “What Dreams May Come,” which took home the Best Visual Effects Oscar at the 71st Academy Awards.
“I am proud to be working with DNEG at such a thrilling and pivotal time in the world of visual effects,” Hynek said. “Technological advancement in our industry is opening previously unattainable creative possibilities, and DNEG is at the forefront of harnessing these technologies in pursuit of storytelling goals. Throughout my career I have endeavored to push the boundaries of what is possible in visual effects. Having recently supervised a short film that made full use of real-time technology in LED volume, as well as testing the full use of Virtual Production on a major Chinese production, I’m looking forward to more opportunities to bring these new technologies and workflows to some truly exciting upcoming projects.”
Hynek has also served as visual effects supervisor on “Jumper,” “xXx,” “Stealth” and “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” The artist previously was the creative director for Mass.Illusion, a visual effects powerhouse that would develop the “bullet-time” effect for “The Matrix.” Hynek has serve as a board member for the Visual Effects Society and on the Executive Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Visual Effects Branch for over 20 years.
Beyond Fest to hold month-long celebration of S.S. Rajamouli, launching with IMAX screening of “RRR”
“From Tollywood to Hollywood,” a month-long celebration of the Indian writer/director S.S. Rajamouli featuring his most renowned work and in-person appearances by the filmmaker himself, is being held by Beyond Fest.
Built in collaboration with Beyond Fest partner American Cinematheque alongside IMAX, Variance Films, Potentate Films and Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, “From Tollywood to Hollywood: The Spectacle & Majesty of S.S. Rajamouli” is the first U.S. retrospective of S.S. Rajamouli. It is also the first time the director has appeared with his films in-person at a U.S. film festival.
“Since inception, Beyond Fest has fought tirelessly to give film fans the best theatrical experiences in the world, ‘From Tollywood to Hollywood delivers on that promise,’” Christian Parkes, co-founder of Beyond Fest, said. “To celebrate the world’s greatest filmmaker and present the biggest film in the world, ‘RRR,’ in IMAX at the most famous theater in the world is the dream culmination of a decade’s work. Glory to the People’s Republic.”
The celebration is launching with an IMAX presentation of “RRR” at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. “From Tollywood to Hollywood” also features a nine-hour marathon of Rajamouli’s works, including “Baahubali: The Beginning,” “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” and “Eega.” Additionally, there will be special screenings of “Magadheera” and “Maryada Ramanna.” All films will be presented in their native Telugu with English subtitles, and intermissions will be observed as originally intended by the filmmaker.
Tickets for all screenings are available through the American Cinematheque’s ticketing site and will be made available for sale Sept 8 at 10 a.m. PT.
Ruth B. to perform at the world premiere of Tyler Perry’s “A Jazzman’s Blues” at TIFF
On Sunday, Sept. 11, singer-songwriter Ruth B. will perform “Paper Airplanes” at the world premiere of the new Tyler Perry film “A Jazzman’s Blues” during the Toronto International Film Festival.
The performance will take place at Roy Thomson Hall, marking the live debut of “Paper Airplanes. The track was written and recorded by Ruth B. and Terence Blanchard specifically for Perry’s film. The track was produced by Ruth B. alongside Oscar and Grammy winning producer D’Mile.
“A Jazzman’s Blues,” which was written, directed and produced by Perry, stars Joshua Boone, Amirah Vann, Solea Pfeiffer, Austin Scott, Milauna Jemai Jackson, Brent Antonello, Brad Benedict, Kario Marcel, Lana Young and Ryan Eggold. The film, a family drama and a tale of forbidden love, follows a family in the South as 40 years of lies and secrets come to a head.
“Paper Airplanes” can also be heard in the film’s trailer and is available on the upcoming Milan Records soundtrack for “A Jazzman’s Blues.”
